5
Read for the Environment
  • Beautify members teamed up with Keep
Carbondale Beautiful in 2004 for the Read for the
    Environment program. Volunteers read
environmental stories to first, second, and third
graders at local Carbondale schools. Following
the stories, a discussion was lead concerning the
litter and recycling issues in which the story
confronted. Children were awarded with coloring
books, crayons and pencils created from recycled
products, as well as recycling information for
    their parents.

6
Anti-Litter Events
  • Every semester USG supports Beautify Southern
    Illinoiss anti-litter efforts for campus,
Carbondale, and the southern Illinois region.
Between 30-150 volunteers work together to
collect litter from designated areas. Volunteers
are rewarded with pizza and beverages after each
    cleanup.

7
Earth Awareness Exhibit
  • The Earth Awareness Exhibit was created by the
Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance in
2004. The Exhibit is a chance for local school
children to learn about various aspects of the
earth. Between 10-20 professionals educate the
children on their area of expertise. Topics
include everything from recycling, to the
rainforest, to solar energy efforts. 320
children attended the event last year, however,
this year we hope to expand our influence to
    include more children.

8
Beautification Projects
  • Beautify Southern Illinois has participated in
various projects to help beautify southern
Illinois. Efforts include planting trees and
    flowers, anti-litter efforts, and restoration
    projects.

9
Environmental Education
  • Environmental education is one of Beautifys
most prevalent goals. Our hope is to create
conscious attitudes from the beginning, which
will eliminate future problems. Besides our big
    projects, Beautify participates with classrooms,
church groups, and organizations to help reach
    all children.

10
Make A Difference Day
  • Make A Difference Day is a national day
dedicated to serving others. This year Beautify
created ten projects for volunteers to
participate in. Projects included a pet parade,
a wildlife demonstration at a local nursing home,
environmental projects at local libraries, a
project to help create a wetland, as well as a
workshop for 100 Girl Scouts to learn about
    various aspects of the environment.
