Title: Artificial Intelligence Today

1
Artificial Intelligence Today
  • Kevin Smith
  • Temple University
  • CIS 55 Section 402

2
Outline
  • Brief History of Artificial Intelligence
  • Definition of Artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Branches of AI
  • Applications of AI
  • Sites for Current Research
  • Overall Conclusion

3
History of Artificial Intellegence
  • 1956 John McCarthy coined the term Artificial
    Intelligence
  • 1960 Demonstration of the first running AI
program, the Logic Theorist (LT) written by Allen
Newell, J.C. Shaw and Herbert Simon (Carnegie
Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon
    University).
  • 1990s Major advances in all areas of AI
  • 2000 Interactive robot pets (a.k.a. "smart toys")
    became commercially available, realizing the
vision of the 18th century novelty toy makers.

4
Definitions for Artificial Intelligence
  • Development of intelligent machines
  •  A branch of computer science devoted to the
development of computer programs that will allow
machines to perform functions normally requiring
    human intelligence
  • Computer intelligence
  • The ability of computers to perform functions
    that normally require human intelligence

5
Branches of Artificial Intelligence
  • Logical AI
  • Search
  • Pattern Recognition
  • Representation
  • Inference
  • Common sense knowledge and reasoning
  • Learning from experience
  • Planning
  • Epistemology
  • Ontology
  • Heuristics
  • Genetic programming

6
Application of Artificial Intelligence
  • Game Playing
  • ex. Looking at a vast number of possibilities in
    chess.
  • Speech Recognition
  • Understanding natural language
  • Computer vision
  • Expert systems
  • Heuristic classification

7
For more Information
  • American Association for Artificial Intelligence
    (AAAI)
  • A nonprofit scientific society devoted to
advancing the scientific understanding of the
    mechanisms underlying thought and intelligent
behavior and their embodiment in machines.
  • MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence
    Laboratory

8
Conclusion
  • Since the term Artificial Intelligence was first
used by a John McCarthy (1956). There are been
huge advances in Artificial Intelligence. In
todays society AI has infiltrated even the
    simplest facets of our lives
  • such as
  • Having artificial customer service
representatives help us check our cellular
    minutes.
  • Troubleshooting with computer programs or help
    with online shopping wizards.
  • I believe that in the future will we rely more
heavily on the use of Artificial Intelligence to
aide us in our everyday lives more so than now.
Going towards an almost symbiotic relationship
with man and the ghost in the machine.
