DEFINITIONS
  • Owners A person or entity who has possession of
    a forklift by virtue of proof of purchase
  • Users A person(s) or entity that utilizes or
    puts into operation a forklift
  • Operators A qualified person who controls the
    movement of the forklift
  • Qualified Person A person who by reason of
    knowledge, experience, or training is familiar
    with the operation to be performed and the
    hazards involved

MANUALS WARNING LABELS
  • The operation manual for that make and model
    forklift are required on all forklifts
  • The operator must know where the manual is
    located on the forklift and refer to it if any
    questions as to proper operation arise.
  • All Danger, Warning, and Caution labels must be
    on the forklift and must be legible.

PRE-START INSPECTION
  • Before each day or at the beginning of
    each shift, the forklift shall be given a visual
    inspection and functional test including, but not
    limited to, the following
  • Operating and emergency controls
  • Safety devices, including seatbelt horn
  • Personal protective devices
  • Air, hydraulic, and fuel system leaks
  • Cables and wiring harnesses
  • Loose or missing parts
  • Tires wheels
  • Warning, control markings, operation manuals
  • Forks and fork attachment points no welds or
    holes allowed, check for replace bent forks.
    Forks should be marked as to there capacity.
    Forks are to be replaced as sets only.

OPERATION OF FORKLIFT
  • Keep the load or boom/forks as low as practical.
  • Cradle the load by tilting the forks back.
  • Slow machine down when turning.
  • Accelerate and brake gently, especially with a
    load.
  • Level the frame prior to lifting a load.
  • Know jobsite obstacles!!!

LOAD DEPOSIT PROCEDURES
  • Never put the load or boom over any people.
  • Place load on landing area carefully.
  • Observe landing and load while lowering forks.
  • Tilt forks forward to deposit load.
  • Remember that after placing load, the center of
    the forklift moves toward the rear.
  • Extract forks with boom or back forklift up
    slowly, and carefully cover the break pedal.
  • As soon as forks are clear of landing, stop and
    make sure lowering path is clear.
  • Lower the boom or mast to the low travel position
    before driving.
  • Look all around before shifting into reverse to
    be sure you have a clear path of travel release
    parking break.
