- Institute for Informatics and Telematics (IIT)
target suitably respond to the challenges
launched by the information and communication
technologies - IIT became operative since 1st March 2002, but
its background is dated in the late 60's, within
CNUCE Institute - IIT exhibits a good harmony between research and
technological activities two aspects of one
single goal

- The Registry activity
- December 1987 IANA approved the ccTLDit and
assigned the role of Italian Registry to
CNR-CNUCE - Today IIT-CNR acts as the Italian Registry which
is in charge of assigning domain names within the
country code top level domain it (ISO 3166-1) - IIT interacts with more than 2.500
providers/maintainers (Registrars) - At present, more than 950.000 domain names are
registered under the ccTLD it - Registration can be submitted by natural or
juridical person of the EU Countries
4Organization of the registry
- The function of manager of .it is performed
inside a department of a research Institute of
the National Council of Research the
administrative contact is the Director of the
Institute - Up to December 2003, the regulatory function has
been performed by an external organization
composed by experts in DNS, called Naming
Authority in this way, the registry didnt have
direct responsibility of the rules applied - A transition is on going the constituencies of
the Local Internet Community have selected their
representatives to form a committee for the rules
(policy board) acting under the umbrella of the
registry that committee will include
representatives of the government - The constitution of an independent entity, with
the participation of CNR, is under evaluation.

About 50 people including staff-operators,
administrative persons and technicians (35 my
equivalent)

- Registry-Registrars like, but not exactly
- The Registry also interacts with the Registrants
- At present the Registry manages both electronic
and paper documents - The Letter of Assumption of Responsibility (LAR)
is received on paper - We are moving to electronic papers digitally
signed

the year - Contacts are in progress with AGCOM and the
Ministry of Communications for running the teer 1 - A presentation of IIT proposal will be done in
October 2003 during an ENUM meeting organised by
AGCOM

- Eliminate limitations for physical persons
- Adoption of IDN
- Eliminate the letter for assumption of
responsibility ? - Improving security and stability
- Improving WHOIS services also taking into account
national and European directives - Harmonizing with .eu public policy directives
and operations - Setting up of a PKI Certification Authority
- This issues and others will be addressed soon by
the newly constituted policy board
