ACGME COMPETENCIES ? STUDENTS SELF-ASSESSMENT
OF THEIR TEACHING SKILLS DM Torre, JR Zebrack,

Background
Results
Methods
Limitations
  • Skills in teaching and self-assessment are
included within three ACGME core competencies
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  • Professionalism
  • Practice-based Learning Improvement (facilitate
the learning of students and other health
    professionals).
  • Teaching opportunities commonly available to
    fourth-year medical students (M4)
  • Limited opportunities for M4s to practice
self-assessment skills specific to teaching role
  • Our study cohort consisted exclusively of M2
and M4 students from one institution.
  • At the end of the OSCE session, all M2 students
completed a 12-item form to evaluate the teaching
effectiveness of their M4 student preceptor.
  • Using a parallel form that used a 5-point Likert
    scale (5 excellent, 1 poor), M4 students
assessed their own teaching skills immediately
    after each session
  • Comparison of ratings showed significant
differences with higher M2 ratings compared to M4
self-assessments in each of the relevant ACGME
    competency areas

Conclusions
  • M4 students used a standardized checklist to
evaluate the proficiency of M2 students (n 190)
in performing an abdominal, cardiovascular and
chest examination on a standardized patient.
  • After completing the formal checklist, M4s were
    instructed to provide immediate, formative
feedback to coach -- to each M2.
  • In preparation for residency, inclusion of
self-assessment activities within a variety of
instructional venues may help enhance students
    proficiency as teachers and physicians.
  • Consistent with the literature in
    self-assessment, high achieving M4 students
    underestimated their competence as educators

Objectives
  • To determine the extent to which high achieving
    M4s accurately self-assess their teaching
    skills.
  • To provide M4s with an opportunity to increase
competency re self assessment of teaching skills

Self-assessment form
Summary
Methods
  • Thirteen M4 volunteers, all members of local
Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society chapter
  • M4s served as trained evaluators during an
    objective structured clinical exam (OSCE)
  • OSCE administered to all M2s at the end of
    required Introduction to Clinical Examination
    (ICE) Course.
  • Medical schools should consider offering 4th
year medical students opportunity to practice and
enhance their teaching skills trough self
    assessment
  • the ability to self assess their own teaching
skills is an important goal for senior students
in preparation for their role of teachers within
    the framework of ACGME competencies
  • With respect to overall teaching effectiveness,
the M2 evaluations of their M4 teachers were
significantly higher than the M4 self-assessment
    ratings
