Title: Collaborative Efforts in Clinical Research and Patient Care Health Systems Research
1Collaborative Efforts in Clinical Research and
Patient CareHealth Systems Research
- By Sara L. Rusch MD
- Chair Department of Medicine
- at
- University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria
- and
- OSF-Saint Francis Medical Center
2Objectives
- Recognize Health Systems Research as an
Opportunity for Collaboration - Illustrate Health Systems Research by Presenting
the Projects in Patient Safety
3Health Systems Research A Different Research
Model
- Health Systems Research studies the current
health care systems and designs new systems that
provide safer more effective care - Goals of the Knowledge Community for Health
Systems Research Collaboratively utilize the
resources in our community to - Directly improve the care of patients
- Generate research papers for national publication
- Bring new dollars into Peoria
- Build our reputation as an Academic Community and
a destination for high quality patient care
4Patient Safety as an Example
- Discovery Forum 2002
- Dr. Yost from Bradley and I are introduced. Dr.
Graumlich soon joins our working group. - We identify Patient Safety as a shared area of
interest
5Why Patient Safety?
- Institute of Medicine Says
- As many as 98,000 Americans die each year as a
result of medical error. - Medical error may be the 8th largest cause of
death in the US. - More people die as a result of medical error than
of breast cancer, motor vehicle accidents or
AIDS.
6 Why is Peoria an ideal location for studies on
Patient Safety?
- The Medical Community has already demonstrated a
commitment to projects in patient safety.
Pockets of research already ongoing - Expertise in business techniques, data mining,
statistics, ethics, nursing, consumer science,
social science, pharmacology are only some of the
resources already existing in the community. - Patient Safety Projects do not require costly
investment in equipment. - Individuals from many disciplines can be involved
yet it is possible for projects to remain
synergistic.
7Does Patient Safety Meet the Goals of Health
System Research?
- Patient Care - Successful projects will directly
improve the healthcare for patients - Publications Safer healthcare systems are a
national priority . - Fiscal Benefit
- Projects likely to be competitively funded.
- Safer, more effective systems save health care
dollars - Reputation Opportunity exists to build a
national reputation and establish Peoria as a
Patient Safety Center.
8General Strategies for Health Systems Research
Collaborations
- Develop a working paper and a preliminary vision.
- Present the concept to multiple individuals of
diverse background and from different
organizations. - Enroll those with shared interests
- Identify several small focused collaborative
projects with high probability of success - Build on these projects to enroll more
individuals and undertake larger projects.
9Patient Safety Program
- Vision and working paper developed
- The collaborative Program for Patient Safety and
Integrative Health Care will foster research and
education on issues impacting on patient safety
leading to safer medical care for patients in
Central Illinois and serving as a model for the
nation.
10- Presentations and Discussions held with multiple
groups and still ongoing. - Several target research projects identified and
collaborations formed

12Collaborations Project One
- Therapeutic Substitution is the substitution of a
chemically different but therapeutically
equivalent drug. (Example Prevacid for Prilosec) - Project Question Does therapeutic substitution
increase medication error? - Collaborators UICOMP/OSF-SFMC
- Status Preliminary Study Completed and
submitted for publication. Grant for larger
study being written
13Collaborations - Project Two
- Project Question Can a system for medication
reconciliation improve the accuracy of home
medications resumed during a hospital stay? - Collaborators UICOMP, OSF-SFMC, Pharmacy
- Status Initial data complete, system revision
designed and implemented, follow-up data being
acquired for analysis
14Collaborations - Project Three
- Project Question What tool can measure how
hospitalized adults perceive their own safety - Collaborators Saint Francis Medical Center
College of Nursing, UICOMP, OSF-SFMC - Status Patient satisfaction surveys reviewed,
patient interviews completed, content areas
identified, instrument items being developed
15Collaborations Project Four
- Project Question - Feasibility and outcomes of
providing hospitalized adults with their current
medications. - Collaborators UICOMP, Family and Consumer
Science/Bradley - Status Draft proposal Developed
16Collaborations - Project Five
- Project Question For children with reflux,
compare surgical outcomes at Childrens Hospital
of Illinois with those nationally - Collaborators UICOMP, CHOI, OSF-SFMC, Industrial
Manufacturing and Engineering/Bradley and
Computer Science and Information Systems/Bradley. - Status Proposal written. Funding applied for
17Collaborations - Project Six
- Project Question Design and validate a
Communication Skills Curriculum (CSC) for Medical
Students that teaches how communication within
teams and across systems effects patient care. - Collaborators M3 clerkship directors at MMCI
and OSF-SFMC, UICOMP - Status Proposal written and submitted for
funding
18Collaborations Project Seven
- Project Question Can Six Sigma Methodology
Improve Health Related Outcomes? - Likely Collaborators OSF-SFMC, Foster College
of BusinessAdministration/Bradley, Caterpillar
Tractor Company - Status Discussion phase
19Collaborations Projects 8,9,???
- Project Question Multiple potential Questions of
Interest - Status Waiting to be identified
- Collaborators Some of the people here today
20Summary
- Health System Research is viable in Peoria.
- It can have direct positive impact on patients,
be published, bring in new dollars and build our
reputation as an exceptional community. - Patient safety is an area of health systems
research around which a focus of expertise is
being developed.
