4
  • First step was for the Workgroup to agree on the
following definition of Public Health Biology
  • the biological and molecular context of public
    health

5
  • The workgroup asked the academic deans of the 36
ASPH-member schools to submit relevant course
    competencies. Nine schools responded.

6
  • Using three conference calls, the Workgroup
agreed on overarching domains into which 6-8 of
    these course competencies fit.

7
  • Delphi 1, 2, 3 were used to decide on consensus
core competencies to represent the discipline of
    public health biology.
  • Participants in Delphi
  • Workgroup
  • Workgroup Resource Group

9
  • Upon graduation, a student with an MPH degree
    will be able to...
  • 1. Integrate general biological and molecular
    concepts into public health.

10
  • 2. Communicate the biological and molecular
    basis of public health.

11
  • 3. Explain the role of biology in the
    ecological model of population-based health.

12
  • 4. Recognize that biological, chemical, and
    physical agents affect human health.

13
  • 5. Apply biological principles to development
    and implementation of disease prevention,
    control, or management programs.

14
  • 6. Describe how behavior alters human biology.

15
  • 7. Describe the role of the immune system in
    population health.

16
  • 8. Explain how genetics and genomics affect
disease processes and public health policy and
    practice.

17
  • 9. Assess the ethical, social, and legal issues
    within public health biology.

18
  • 10. Apply evidence-based biological and
molecular concepts to inform public health
    laws, policies, and regulations.
