2PRIME-LC GOAL
- PRIME-LC goal is to provide specialized training
for future physicians, strongly committed to
careers in public service, to improve the health
needs of underserved Latino Communities as
Latinos become the largest population group in
California
3PRIME-LC is a response to an increasing demand
for physician-leaders, who are culturally
sensitive and linguistically competent, to
address specific health needs of Latinos of all
ages and backgrounds

- Medical School Training (Undergrad Med Ed)
- Combined MD and Masters (MPH or MBA) with
research project - Residency (Graduate Med Ed)
- Special consideration for Family Med,
Pediatrics, Internal Med, Psychiatry, Emergency
Medicine and Ob/Gyn at UCIMC (PRIME-LC students
not limited to UCI residencies or primary care) - Post-Residency (Continuing Med Ed)
- Annual CME Retreat and Placement opportunities
in leadership roles

health care delivery, research and policy in
underserved Latino communities
6Unique Features of PRIME-LC
- Five Year combined MD and Masters (MPH or MBA)
with research project - Masters project on Latino health disparities,
public health or health care policy - Residency experience to enhance specialized
medical school training - Continuing Medical Education on major health
issues facing Latinos in the U.S. - Customized placement in leadership roles in
public health practice, health policy, health
management, clinical and academic medicine. - Language, cultural immersion, and clinical
experiences obtained both in Mexico and U.S.

- Epidemiology and biostatistics of diseases with
high incidence and prevalence in Latinos - Specialized Patient-Doctor clinical courses,
clinical experiences in Latino communities and
tailored problem-based learning (PBL) - Core clinical clerkships and additional PBL
groups focused on Latino culture, social
structure, demography, immigration, and health
beliefs practices - Tailored Masters-level courses taught by UCI The
Paul Merage School of Business, the
multidisciplinary Chicano/Latino Studies, and CSU
Long Beach Community Medicine MPH. - Medical electives in U.S. Latino Communities

9Who will qualify for PRIME-LC?
- Carefully selected group of students from all
backgrounds enrolling at UCI COM who can - Meet all requirements for medical school
admission - Demonstrate commitment to health care needs of
the underserved - Demonstrate basic Spanish language skills

10PRIME-LC Application
- All applicants must complete an AMCAS
application - Qualified candidates will be sent a UCI
secondary application including a supplemental
application for the PRIME-LC program - Secondary application will be reviewed by the
Admissions Committee - Selected applicants will be interviewed by
faculty and student with a third interview
conducted in Spanish

14Financial Support
- Students accepted into the PRIME-LC can apply
for scholarship plus other types of need-based
financial aid. The remaining financial need may
be financed with federal loans including
primary care loans. - In addition, PRIME-LC graduate physicians
committed to work in medically underserved areas
of the state may be eligible for the Office of
State Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)
NHSC/State loan repayment program. In this
program, students can receive up to 120,000 loan
forgiveness.
