What is Medicine?
  • Medicine is a vocation in which a doctors
knowledge, clinical skills, and judgement are put
in the service of protecting and restoring human
    well-being
  • Doctors in Society, Royal College Physicians
    (2005)

7
  • This purpose is realised through a partnership
between patient and doctor, one based on mutual
    respect, individual responsibility, and
    appropriate accountability
  • What is key to the relationship?

8
TRUST the reward of a professional
  • Medical Professionalism signifies a set of
    values, behaviours, and relationships that
underpins the trust the public has in doctors
  • We have an obligation to respect and repay that
trust by being prepared to demonstrate that we
    are worthy of it

Definition from Doctors in Society, Royal College
Physicians (2005)
9
Trust a life long commitment
  • In their day-to-day practice, doctors are
    committed to
  • integrity
  • compassion
  • altruism
  • continuous improvement
  • excellence
  • working in partnership with members of the
    wider healthcare team.
  • These values, which underpin the science and
practice of medicine, form the basis for a moral
contract between the medical profession and
    society.

HIPPOCRATIC OATH
Hippocrates 460-377 BC
  • In 1947 the World Medical Association produced a
modern restatement of the Hippocratic Oath, known
as the Declaration of Geneva, and to base upon it
an International Code of Medical Ethics.
  • In our Faculty the Declaration of Geneva has been
slightly modified so that it is appropriate for
    all health care professions.
  • During the Facultys graduation ceremony, the new
graduates in all these professions each affirm
the amended version (World Medical Association
1994 and Liverpool 1995) of the Declaration.
  • At the start of your career I ask you to stand
and read with me the Liverpool declaration as
    testament to your intentions.

11
  • At the time of being admitted as a Member of my
    Profession,
  • I solemnly pledge myself to consecrate my life to
    the service of humanity
  • I will give to my teachers the respect and
    gratitude which is their due
  • I will practise my profession with conscience and
    dignity
  • The health of those in my care will be my first
    consideration
  • I will respect the secrets that are confided in
me, even after a patient has died
  • I will maintain by all the means in my power the
honour and the noble traditions of my profession

12
  • My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers
  • I will not permit considerations of age, disease
or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender,
    nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual
orientation or social standing to intervene
between my duty and my patient
  • I will maintain the utmost respect for human life
from its beginnings, even under threat,
  • and I will not use my specialist knowledge
contrary to the laws of humanity
  • I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon
    my honour.
