Transfer StudentsCUNY Skills Assessment Test

• Transfer applicants can meet the skills
  admissions requirements in (CSAT) reading,
  writing, and mathematics on the basis of the SAT,
  ACT, NYS Regents, and/or CUNY Assessment Test
  scores.
• Students with a 3 credit college-level English
  course and/or mathematic course or its
  equivalent, from an accredited college or
  university, and have received a grade of C or
  better are exempt.
• The grades must appear on the official transcript
  from the institution that the student is
  transferring from. 
• You may have received a letter notifying you of
  the date and time to take the test. 
• If you cannot make the scheduled date, you must
  contact the Testing Office to reschedule at
  212-237-8108.  Unless you are exempt, you will
  not be allowed to register for courses without
  taking the CUNY Assessment Tests.
• To be eligible for a 4-year degree program at
  John Jay, you should have taken and passed the
  CUNY Assessment Tests unless you were exempt by
  SAT, ACT, and / or NYS Regents scores.  Associate
  degree candidates must pass the CUNY Proficiency
  Exam (CPE) in order to be eligible for a 4-year
  degree program.

CUNY Assessment Tests (CAT)

• Students with college level English and college
  level Math are exempt from taking the CUNY Skills
  Assessment Test in Reading, Writing, and
  Mathematics
• SAT I score of 480 or higher in Verbal or
  Critical Reading and 500 on Mathematics
• ACT score of 21 or higher in English and Math
• New York State Regents score of 75 or higher in
  English and Math
• COMPASS Mathematics Test is required for math
  placement.
• Does not apply if you transfer in with
  College Level math course(s)
• For NYS Regents exemptions an official High
  School transcript must be sent to the Admissions
  Office, unless included with your application.

CUNY Proficiency Exam (CPE)

• Students with greater than 45 credits must take
  the CUNY Proficiency Exam by their 60th credit
• Testing Office will notify you of eligibility
• 3 chances to take test
• A no show a failure
• A registration STOP will be placed on your record
  if you fail to take the CPE, which will prevent
  you from registering
• Student are exempt from the CPE exam if they have
  completed a Bachelor's degree from an accredited
  University

• View your unofficial transcript on eSims.
• You have received credit for the courses
  indicated, DO NOT REPEAT THOSE COURSES!
• Any discrepancies need to be resolved in the
  Admissions Office by the end your first semester.
• If you had courses in progress at the time you
  applied to John Jay, mail or bring in an official
  transcript (in a sealed envelope) to the
  Admissions Office.

Understanding Your Evaluation
You may encounter one or more of the below items
on your evaluation. Please become familiar with
them.

• 001, 002, 003 (elective credit), may be applied
  to electives or general requirements in some
  cases (i.e. Art 001ART/MUS/DRA requirement)
• 0 credits next to a course Exempts you from
  course, no credit awarded due to a grade of D
• If you failed to receive credit for a course
  taken at your previous school, it can be because
  John Jay does not have a comparable course.
• If you would like to appeal this action, please
  bring in a course description from your previous
  colleges course catalog, bulletin, or syllabi to
  the Admissions Office, Room 4205N.
• Course Substitution Students seeking a
  substitution for a course, i.e., Law 202 for Law
  204, must consult with the departmental chair for
  approval. A maximum of three course
  substitutions is permitted for each degree
  program.

General Education Requirements Exemptions

• Can I be exempted from any General Ed. Courses?
• There are 5 possible exemptions.

• Although we provide you with an outline on how to
  receive exemptions, final adjudication and
  awarding of exemptions lies with the individual
  departments.
• What does being exempted from a course mean?
• Being exempted from a course means one is not
  obligated to take the specific course in question
  for matriculation. HOWEVER, being exempted from a
  specific course does not exempt one from
  fulfilling the overall credit requirement for
  graduation. (120 credits) Exemptions from a
  particular course are not accompanied by the
  credits awarded for the course.

General Education Requirements Exemptions

• Am I eligible for an exemption? How do I apply
  for/get an exemption?
• Speech 113 To apply for an exemption for speech,
  contact the Department of Speech, Theatre, and
  Media Studies.
• Math 104, 105 Based on your scores from the CUNY
  Assessment Exam, which were taken prior to your
  entrance to John Jay, the Mathematics Department
  will have automatically exempted qualified
  individuals. To verify and confirm ones
  exemption status, contact the Registrars.
• Natural Science 107
• Students who took
• 3 years of high school science and
• passed 2 regents exams (NYS Regents ONLY with a
  score of 75 or better)
• are eligible to be exempt from Natural Science
  (applicable only to NYS residents). To
  apply/confirm ones exemption, contact the
  Registrars for the appropriate form and at One
  Stop Desk.

General Education Requirements Exemptions

• Foreign Language
• There are five ways one can be eligible for a
  foreign language exemption
• NYS Regents Individuals who took and passed the
  NYS Foreign Language Regents Level III exam are
  exempt from the Foreign Language requirement.
• AP Individuals who participated and passed with
  a minimum grade of 3 on Advanced Placement Exams
  are exempt. (6 credit are awarded to those who
  passed the AP)
• CLEP exam and departmental exam Those who take
  the CLEP (College Level Examination Program -The
  registrar holds this exam only 3 times a year.)
  and departmental exam and pass will be awarded an
  exemption.
• Oversea HS Diploma Individuals who possess a
  high school diploma from overseas are exempt from
  the FL req. Please check with the Foreign
  Language dept. for confirmation.
• Transfer Credits Individual who transferred from
  another university who passed with a grade of C
  or higher in a foreign language, are exempt from
  taking the FL req. at John Jay. Must have a 200
  level or above unless a second half course such
  as 102.

Electives

• What are electives?
• Electives are courses taken which do not go
  towards fulfilling either general education
  requirements or major requirements.
• Why do I need to take them?
• To fulfill the remaining credit requirement for
  matriculation.
• How many credits do I need to take of electives?
• Approximately 30 credits.
• Is there anyway I can make these elective credits
  more productive?
• You may utilize your elective credits to pursue a
  minor or certificate program, such as the CASAC
  or Dispute Resolution.

Minors

• What are minors?
• Minors are concentrations in a specific
  discipline.
• Why should I pursue a minor?
• A minor is a beneficial asset to any individual
  who has a passion for a specific subject area. It
  is both a productive use of your time and effort
  as well as a very marketable trait for
  post-graduation employment.
• How do I pursue a minor?
• To pursue a minor, one must take 18 credits worth
  of courses in the specific discipline. The
  specific courses acceptable for the satisfactory
  completion of the minor are at the discretion of
  the department with whom you wish to seek it.

• How do I declare a minor?
• Once the student is in touch with the subject
  areas dept. and successfully completes the
  classes required for a minor, he or she must
  declare the minor by completing the Declaration
  of Minor form with the Department Chairpersons
  signature.

Applying For Financial Aid

• Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
• For New York State Residents Only
• After completing your FAFSA, complete your online
  TAP application by linking to it directly from
  your FAFSA Confirmation Page, or by going to the
  quick link button, Apply for TAP, on the HESC Web
  site.
• You will be prompted to get a HescPIN (Personal
  Identification Number). You will use your HescPIN
  to "sign" your TAP application, to keep track of
  your application information, or to make
  changes.
• Once you have your HescPIN, complete your online
  TAP application. Information from your FAFSA and
  your family's calculated NYS net taxable income
  will be pre-filled on your online TAP
  application.

• Students who receive TAP awards MUST register for

  you registered for courses that do NOT apply to
  your major, we are required to return the award
