What is a Program of Study?
  • Is a requirement of Perkins Act IV, Public Law
    109-270
  • Addresses key issues that must be identified by
    Michigan in the New State Plan to help ensure the
    success of all career and technical education
    students
  • Meets the four key components described in the
    following slides taken directly from the Federal
    requirements that must be addressed in the New
    State Plan

Key component 1- Incorporates Secondary and
Postsecondary
  • Ensures academic and technical course pathways
    for success in high school and preparation for
    postsecondary entry
  • Use of the Career Clusters Model is validated by
    business and industry
  • There is a process for postsecondary level
    program and course determinations
  • Requirements for both strengthening academic,
    technical and employability skills of students

Identifying Necessary Elements
  • Provide services, activities, and instructional
    program offerings that are of sufficient size,
    scope and quality to be effective
  • Link secondary and postsecondary career and
    technical education, including tech prep program.

    strengthen their skills, increase their
    employment potential, or for personal interest.

Secondary to Postsecondary Linkages Plan
  • Bureau of Career Education awarded competitive
    grants to 13 community colleges and their
    secondary partners to develop seamless Career
    Cluster components in 2006.
  • Throughout the life of the State Plan, OPS will
    continue to assist community colleges to link
    secondary academic and technical standards to
    individual colleges occupational education
    courses. The product is the content for
    articulation agreements.

Dual Enrollment
  • Students enrolled in high school and college
  • Regular college class offered at the high school
    or at the college
  • Instructor is a college faculty member
  • Grades are recorded on the college transcript and
    may also be recorded on the high school
    transcript
  • Tuition and fees are paid by the high school or
    by the student
