Title: OUR AMAZING SOLAR SYSTEM

1
OUR AMAZING SOLAR SYSTEM!
  • Did You Know?
  • Mr. Penningtons Class
  • 2007-2008

2
DID YOU KNOW
  • Saturns rings are chunks of ice and rocks?
Saturns rings orbit Saturn. Saturn got its
rings by the chunks of ice and rocks that came
toward Saturn. Saturn sucked them in closer and
formed a ring shape. One day Saturn will suck in
the chunks of ice and rock in and Saturn will not
have any more rings. Saturn is a great planet to
    learn about.

DID YOU KNOW
  • that black holes are made from stars that blow
up? The stars gravity pulls all the material
that remains after the explosion inward,
squeezing it smaller and smaller. A black hole
has so strong of gravity that nothing can escape
from it, not even light. As you can see black
    holes are very interesting.

DID YOU KNOW
  • that around four and a half billion years ago,
neither the Earth nor any other planet existed?
There was just a dark very hot cloud of gas and
dust going around the newly formed sun.
Gradually, the cloud cooled and the gas began to
condense into billions of droplets. Clearly,
Earth is an important part of our solar system.

DID YOU KNOW
  • Pluto is a dwarf planet? In 1930, an
astronomer named Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto.
Pluto is named after the Roman God of the
underworld. A girl named Venetia Burney from
England originally suggested the name Pluto.
Eris is also a dwarf planet and is the largest.
Xena is another dwarf planet in space. Did you
    learn interesting info about Pluto?

6
DID YOU KNOW
  • Do you know what causes summer? The Earth spins
around. It tilts closest to the sun during the
summer. The sun shines on the North parts of the
Earth. These things cause us to have summer!

DID YOU KNOW
  • that Mercurys nickname is Red Planet. Mercury
is the next smallest planet to Pluto. Mercurys
distance from the sun is 36,000,000 miles.
Mercury has zero moons on its planet. Mercury is
the coldest planet. Mercury is the closet planet
to the sun. Mercury takes 88 earth days to orbit
the sun. Clearly, Mercury is an important to the
    solar system.

DID YOU KNOW
  • that black holes lead nowhere? If you got sucked
into a black hole you would get crushed.Black
holes form by stars building gas and
exploding.Black holes suck the gas from the
closest moon but dont suck the hole thing
in.Black holes can be any size.Did you know about
    black holes? Now you do!

DID YOU KNOW
  • Asteroids are in the solar system. Asteroids are
the largest of space rocks. Asteroids are very
big. Asteroids are very hot probably as hot as
the sun. Asteroids are very unique in many ways.
  • By Michael

10
DID YOU KNOW
  • Jupiter is an awesome planet? Jupiter has more
than 60 moons. Also did you know Jupiter is the
5th planet from the sun. Jupiter is a gas giant.
Also the Asteroid Belt is located between Jupiter
and Mars. Jupiter is known for the Great Red
Spot. Also Jupiter is 11 times the size of our
Earth. Now do you think Jupiter is a amazing
    planet?

DID YOU KNOW
  • that Venus is almost the same size as Earth?
Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system.
Thick clouds always cover Venus, and Venus sucks
in the suns heat. Isnt Venus a really cool
    planet?
  • By Mitchell

12
DID YOU KNOW
  • that Mercury is a very cool planet? Did you know
that Mercury is the closest planet to the sun but
its not the hottest? That is because Mercury
does not have a thick atmosphere so it cant trap
the heat inside. Mercury is the next smallest
planet other than Pluto. Did you know that the
distance between Mercury and the sun is
36,000,000 miles away? It takes 88 Earth days to
orbit the sun and it takes 59 Earth days to spin
on its axis. It has no moons now, that is
fascinating. Wow, Mercury is a very unique
    planet.

13
DID YOU KNOW
  • that asteroids go really fast? Asteroids
knocked out all the dinosaurs. Will asteroids hit
the Earth again? Did you know that the largest
asteroid is 4,150 feet wide and six hundred feet
deep? Did you know comets are not as big as
asteroids? These are some details about
    asteroids.

14
DID YOU KNOW
  • Saturns rings are rocks and ice?Saturn got its
rings by sucking up ice and rocks from the solar
system. One day Saturn will suck up rocks and ice
and Saturns rings wont orbit Saturn. Saturn is
a great planet to learn about.

15
Did You Know
  • that the sun is halfway through its life? In
about five billion years the sun will start to
become red and it will grow bigger. It will
become so hot that the ice at the Earths north
pole will melt and oceans will boil. The sun
will grow until it swallows all of the planets
including Earth! The sun will begin to shrink
and become dimmer and dimmer until it is a small
faded star called a White Dwarf. Clearly, the
sun is an important part of our Solar System.
  • By Grace

16
DID YOU KNOW
  • Pluto is not a planet anymore. Pluto is A dwarf
planet. Pluto is rock and ice. Pluto is so cold.
Did you know that if you take your helmet off on
Pluto, then your head would freeze?
  • By Gerald

17
DID YOU KNOW
  • that Pluto is not a planet? Pluto is a dwarf
planet so that tells us that Pluto is not a
planet. In 2006 scientists said that Pluto is not
a planet anymore. In 2003, scientists said that
they have found a bigger dwarf planet than Pluto.
Did you know that Pluto has a moon called
Charon? If you want to learn more, go to the
    computer or read books.
  • By Gaby

18
DID YOU KNOW
  • that stars are made of gases? The sun is a star,
and there are stars bigger than the sun. The sun
is the closest star to Earth. Stars come in many
sizes and when they die they blow up. Stars that
have a big mass are usually big and bright stars.
Now do you think stars are amazing?

DID YOU KNOW
that Neptune is 2,800,000,000 miles away from
the sun? Also did you know that Neptune has four
rings circling it? Also did you know that Neptune
has a great dark spot. It is a storm just like
the one on Jupiters spot. By Connor
20
DID YOU KNOW
  • THAT PLUTO IS A DWARF PLANET?
  • IN 1930, CLYDE TOMBAUGH DISCOVERED PLUTO? PLUTO
IS A MIXTURE OF GASES. THE NEW LARGEST DWARF
PLANET IS ERIS. THE LAST DISCOVERED DWARF PLANET
    WAS XENA.
  • BY CAMERON

21
DID YOU KNOW
  • most of Venus is covered in lava? Venus is the
second planet from the sun. Another fact about
Venus is it is about the size of earth. Those are
some facts about Venus. Truly Venus is an amazing
    planet.
  • By Bryce

22
DID YOU KNOW
  • Jupiter is a unique planet? Jupiters Great
Red Spot is actually a storm that has existed
since the seventeenth century. Also Jupiter is a
gas planet. Once and for all, Jupiter is the
largest planet in the solar system.
