Introducing Charles Darwin
3
Jean Lemarck
  • Jean Lemarck was the first to develop the idea of
    species modification.
  • Lemarck proposed that acquired traits were passed
on traits not controlled by genes body
    builder, tattoo, blacksmith.
  • First to observe that organisms change over a
    period of time.

Charles Darwin
  • Theory of Natural Selection defines him.
  • Went to school for the clergy.
  • Uninterested in religious study turned to
    science.
  • Got enlisted to sail on the H.M.S Beagle.
  • Five year expedition to map the coast of South
    America.

More Chuck D
  • Darwin observed that everything that has happened
with changing species, has happened over
    millions of years.

9
The Galapagos Islands
  • Found off the western coast of South America.
  • Studied the Galapagos Finches beaks of
    different birds.
  • Chuck D believed that these birds adapted (beaks)
    for the weather conditions.

10
Darwins Finches
  • Darwin hypothesized that different finches had
customized beaks for their different kinds of
food larger beaks were used for cracking nuts.
  • Darwin also believed ALL of these finches had a
    common ancestor.

11
Natural Selection
  • AKA survival of the fittest.
  • Organisms with well suited structures will
survive long enough to pass on those features.
  • Darwin also states that ALL species have ONE or a
    few common ancestors.
  • EVOLUTION!

12
Darwin Nat. Selection
13
Modification by Nat. Selection
  • The environment limits the growth of populations.
  • War, disease, limited supply of resources.
  • Birth rate vs. Death Rate.

14
How Modification Works
  • Certain organisms will have traits that are
    better suited for the environment.
  • These organisms will produce more young these
offspring will continue to pass on this trait.
  • These are known as favorable traits.
  • Many traits do not succeedDIE OUT!
