Roadless Lands and Hunting
  • It really should be no surprise to anyone that
if more and more people can easily get deeper
into important wildlife areas, were going to
have to compensate with shorter seasons, reduced
bag limits or controlled hunts. Jim
Unsworth, Wildlife Division Chief for the Idaho
    Fish and Game Department. (Spokesman-Review,
    Tipping the Balance, 12/1/02)

24
Off Road Vehicles. The Threat To Roadless Lands
  • Unregulated, irresponsible and out-of-control
use of ATVs threatens our hunting heritage.
  • David Stalling

25
The Growth of ORVs
  • In 2001 59,423 ATVs and off-road motorbikes
were registered with the Idaho Dept. of Parks and
    Recreation.
  • Today more than 100,000 ATVs are registered by
the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.
Another estimated 15000 are unregistered. The
agency estimates the growth will continue at
    about 10,000 per year

29
State Wildlife Commissions and Federal Agencies
  • Idaho has (at last count) 26 hunt units that have
    banned ATVs use for hunting.

30
How important is it?
  • ATVs provide hunters easy access into areas that
    once were hard to access.
  • Simply put unmanaged ATV use is reducing
    habitat security, increasing big game
vulnerability and, in the long term, greatly
    reducing hunting opportunities. David Stalling

31
So Why Should Hunters and anglers Care About
Roadless Lands?
32
Roadless lands allow bucks and bulls to grow to
maturity while still allowing liberal hunting
seasons
33
There are a few other reasons Youll be
pleasantly surprised more often
34
Youll hone better survival skills
