Title: Great Lakes Basin

1
Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem Team Lake Michigan
DSS Demo
2
GLBET Charge for the GIS/DSS Committee
  • Define the capabilities of the Great Lakes Basin
    field stations, programs, and Team
  • Inventory existing hardware, software, time, and
    expertise
  • Identify and summarize Great Lakes basin issues
that can be addressed using geospatial
    technologies
  • What management questions or decisions are
required and can benefit from geospatial
    information
  • A pilot project (GIS/DSS demo) was determined to
be the best example to show what can be done,
what needs to be done, and what questions need to
    be answered.

3
What is a Decision Support System
  • Decision Support System (DSS)
  • a set of software tools that can be used to help
guide the resource management agencies by giving
them an interface to ask questions and provide a
way to display multiple data sources

4
What questions should we answer with the DSS demo?
  • The GLBET decided on two priorities
  • Lake Sturgeon
  • Islands
  • Islands chosen for the DSS demo
  • Cross-programmatic
  • Immediate Need
  • Discrete Boundaries

5
Expectations of the GIS/DSS demo
  • Originally, the GIS/DSS demo encompassed the
    whole Great Lakes Basin.
  • The demo was scaled down to emphasize Lake
    Michigan.
  • Less area covered
  • More manageable
  • Identified a data source
  • Completely contained within the U.S.

6
Software for the DSS demo
  • Chose MapObjects LT2 (ESRI)
  • Free distribution
  • Can design application to accomplish a specific
    task/answer a specific question
  • Perform spatial queries.
  • Display data using classifications, graduated
    symbols, and labeling.
  • Pan and zoom through multiple map layers.
  • Get information on map features
  • Easy to use (user needs no or little training)
  • Easy to install on PC
  • Access an unrivaled assortment of native data
formats ranging from standard GIS formats
(ArcInfo coverages and ESRI shapefiles) to CAD
formats (DXF, DWG, and DGN), as well as a variety
    of image formats, including MrSID.
  • Other programming languages - Visual Basic,
Delphi, Visual C, PowerBuilder, Access, or
    other popular 32-bit programming environments
