Title: oneFish by SIFAR: the participatory approach to fisheries information management in the virtual envi

1
oneFish by SIFAR the participatory approach to
fisheries information management in the virtual
environment
  • oneFish is being implemented by the
  • Support unit for International Fisheries and
    Aquatic Research SIFAR
  • SIFAR is funded by a range of donors including
NORAD, CIDA, The World Bank, Iceland, UNDP and
DFID. SIFAR operates in partnership with the FAO
    Fisheries Department, Rome.

2
  • oneFish facilitates the sharing and exchange of
information that will promote, encourage and lead
    to
  • Responsible Research for Responsible Fisheries
  • oneFish subject coverage encompasses all aspects
of fisheries and other aquatic (and non-aquatic)
activities that impact upon fisheries and aquatic
resources, including fish culture and the
capture, culture and exploitation of other
aquatic resources, both living and non-living.

3
  • oneFish Project Records
  • FIPIS
  • FAO Fisheries Project Information System
    c.5,500 project records
  • FIMIS
  • FAO Fisheries Management Information System
    c.1,000 project records
  • New Fisheries Project Data
  • from various donor organizations, including
FAO DFID EU and The World Bank

4
  • oneFish Knowledge Objects
  • Each fisheries project record is an individual
    oneFish record.
  • Each oneFish record is called a Knowledge
    Object.
  • Other types of oneFish Knowledge Objects include
  • Conference papers Reports Audio clips
  • Maps Diagrams Graphic files
  • Books Bibliographies Directories
  • Articles Journals Newsletters
  • Project outputs CD ROMs Film Clips
  • Videos Research papers Field documents

5
  • Full Text in oneFish
  • Upload Knowledge - If your Knowledge Object is in
electronic form the file can be uploaded and
stored on the SIFAR/oneFish server in Rome.
  • Link to Knowledge - Alternatively, you can create
links to full text Knowledge Objects that are
stored on other websites, e.g. online journals,
electronic books and organizational or thematic
    websites.
  • All of this information becomes part of a
searchable knowledge base of fisheries and
    aquatic information.
  •

6
  • oneFish Design Concept
  • Because oneFish aimed to be an online service
utilising the Internet and World Wide Web, the
Chief Designer, Greg Searle, went to this medium
to study the ways in which information is being
organised and managed on the Web.
  • Consequently the design of oneFish is based on
the way in which popular Web directories and
Internet portals like Yahoo! and Netscape are
    organised and managed.
  •

7
  • oneFish Topics
  • oneFish subject categories are called Topics.
  • oneFish top-level topics are called Worldviews.
  • Every oneFish Topic has a number of Sub-topics.
  • The hierarchical arrangements of oneFish Topics
and Sub-topics are called Topic Trees.
  • Cross-references between oneFish Topics are
    called Relationships or Related Topics.

  • oneFish Editors
  • The Chief Editor and Assistant Editor - overall
management responsibility for the Topics and
    Knowledge within oneFish.
  • Topic Editors - Individuals and organisations
will be encouraged to Adopt A Topic and manage
and develop specific topic areas within oneFish.
  • Donor Organizations - are already identifying
individuals within their organizations who will
take on the rôle of Topic Editor for their
    information.
  • Individuals - a number of individuals have
already volunteered to manage and edit their
    specialised subject areas.
  • oneFish Users
  • Ordinary User - anyone who can access the
Internet/World Wide Web will be able to access
oneFish and search and retrieve knowledge.
  • Registered User - if an individual registers as a
user, they will be able to submit and upload
Knowledge Objects to oneFish. These submission
will go first to the Editor of the relevant
Topic, who will assess the quality, value and
relevance of Knowledge Objects submitted to them,
and accept, refuse or forward the Knowledge
Object to the Editor of a more appropriate
    Topic.

Norway, ICEIDA, CIDA, IDRC, The World Bank and
    the UNDP.
  • oneFish is receiving active support and
investment of resources from the FAO into the
development of the Community Directory Server
(CDS) software, the platform for oneFish.
  • oneFish / CDS software has been adopted for other
FAO information systems, e.g. UN Atlas of the
Seas and InfoNET (water and irrigation).
  • oneFish has been identified by various
institutions as one of the mediums through which
they will disseminate their research output in
the future, e.g. UBC Fisheries Centre, CEMARE.
  • oneFish is part of an EU project proposal to
    develop an online fish technology
    database/information service.
  • oneFish will replace FIPIS, and is proposed as a
permanent repository for the data collected by
    completed fisheries projects, e.g. BOBP.
