Religion
  • Despite the fact that she lived a rather
sheltered life, her writing reveals an almost
uncanny grasp of the nuances of human behavior.
She was a deeply devoted Catholic living in the
    mostly Protestant South.

Moving On Up
When she graduated in 1945, she graduated with a
B.A. degree. O'Connor then continued her studies
at the University of Iowa, where she attended
writer's workshops conducted by Paul Engle. At
the age of 21 she published her first short
story, 'The Geranium', in Accent. In the
following year she received the degree of Master
of Fine Arts in Literature. In 1947 she lived for
seven months at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., an

Near the end
  • In 1951 she was diagnosed with lupus, and
subsequently returned to her ancestral farm
Andalusia in Milledgeville. There she raised and
nurtured some 100 peafowl. Obsessed with birds of
all kinds, she raised ducks, hens, geese, and any
sort of exotic bird she could obtain, as well as
incorporated images of peacocks often in her
    books.
