Coup Sticks
  • By Jenna Joseph

2
What is a coup stick?
  • A coup stick is a stick that Native Americans
    used for different reasons.
  • The coup stick is usually made with leather,
feathers, beads, and in some cases, otter fur.

3
Example of coup stick
4
Who can have a coup stick?
  • In some tribes, the coup stick was passed down
    from father to son.

5
Background info.
  • Coup stick was also called the counting coup
  • If you touched the enemys teepee, you got a
special bead that you would paint a teepee on and
    add to your coup stick.
  • Were originally meant for a data table on success
  • Shows bravery

6
The enemy
  • Native Americans admired killing the enemy with
their coup stick because they were rewarded three
new coups. They enjoyed this so they could have
more weapons and more room to show off success.

7
Instead of the coup stick
  • The coup sticks were honored by native American's
, but I think that they should have other weapons
to decorate like arrows because the coup sticks
were the only weapons they could use during a
    war.

8
If I could change the coup stick
  • I would make it pointy at the one end that you
dont hold, because you do a lot to the enemies
with the stick. You have to touch enemies in
order to decorate it. That way it is easier to
    mess with them.

9
Where are coup sticks today?
  • Coup sticks are not usually used today. Mainly
the few Native American tribes we still have
today use them. People still make coup sticks in
camps and scouts, because it is traditional, but
    they are mainly not used.
