Update for Berry Crops
  • January 14, 2008
  • Joe DeFrancesco
  • Oregon State University

    codes
  • Correction (lime sulfur/strawberry)
  • Newly granted registrations
  • Registrations in Progress
  • MRL Harmonization

    (subgroup)
  • IRAC Insecticide/miticide resistance code
  • Based on Site of Action main and subgroups

New Registrations
6
Types of Registrations
  • Section 3
  • Full, permanent federal registration must be
    registered in Oregon
  • Federal label or supplemental label
  • Section 24c
  • State or regional registration carries SLN and
is used in conjunction with federal label
  • Section 18
  • Emergency exemption (time-limited)

7
New RegistrationsInsecticides
8
Mustang(zeta-cypermethrin)
  • Caneberries and Blueberries
  • Label issued March 2007
  • Synthetic pyrethroid chemistry for resistance,
avoid close rotation with other pyrethroids
  • 1 day PHI will enable applications close to or
    between harvests
  • Pests controlled larval stage of leafrollers
and winter moth adult root weevils

9
Delegate and Radiant(spinetoram)
  • Caneberries and Blueberries Delegate
  • Strawberries Radiant (not on current handout)
  • Labels issued October 2007
  • Spinosyn chemistry similar to spinosad (Success
Entrust) avoid close rotation with spinosad
    products
  • PHI Blue 3 day Cane and Straw 1 day
  • Pests controlled Lepidopteran larvae
    (leafrollers, fruitworms, armyworm,etc)
raspberry fruit worm gall midge thrips

10
Provado and Admire(imidacloprid)
  • Caneberries (already registered in blueberries
    and strawberries)
  • Labels issued August 2007
  • Note PHI for all berries and both formulations
  • Provado Solupak foliar applied PHI 3 days
  • Admire Pro soil applied and taken up by the
roots to foliage PHI 7 days
  • Imidacloprid is readily translocated throughout
    the plant
  • Pests controlled aphids, leafhoppers and thrips

11
Actara(thiamethoxam)
  • Caneberries (already registered in blue and
    strawberries)
  • Label issued July 2007
  • Foliar applied translocates locally
  • PHI 3 day
  • Neonicotinoid chemistry similar to imidacloprid
    (Admire, Provado) resistant management important
    with all registered neonicotinoids
  • Pests controlled aphids, leafhoppers,
    stinkbugs, and root weevil adults.

12
Platinum(thiamethoxam)
  • Label change for blueberry and strawberry
  • New rate is 12 fl oz product per application (old
    8 fl oz).
  • Soil-applied, highly water soluble, systemic in
plant by root uptake, translocated throughout
    plant
  • Broad-spectrum activity aphids, leafhoppers,
grubs, Japanese beetle. Root weevil adults and
    larvae?
  • Neonicotinoid chemistry, similar to imidacloprid
    (Provado/Admire) be mindful of alternating
    chemistries
  • Currently negotiating use in Caneberries

13
New RegistrationsFungicidesand Nematicides
14
Orbit (propiconazole)
  • Caneberries, Blueberries, Strawberries
  • (also currant, gooseberry, and cranberry)
  • Triazole fungicide for control of
  • Leaf Spot, Rust, Mummyberry, Powdery, and other
    diseases
  • PHI
  • Caneberry, Blueberry, Currant and Gooseberry 30
    days
  • Strawberry 0 days
  • REI 24 hours for all crops
  • FRAC 3 (same as fenbuconazole/Indar, which is
registered in blueberries be mindful to rotate
    chemistries)

15
Vydate(oxamyl)
  • OR and WA Section 18 (emergency registration) for
raspberries for nematode control for Spring 2008.
  • Vydate is a soil-applied insecticide/nematicide
  • Three residue field trials conducted at NWREC in
2006 and efficacy data from Jack Pinkerton, et
al, will support the Section 18 request
  • Full, permanent registration of oxamyl will be
    for both raspberries and blackberries.
  • Vydate is not yet registered !

16
Nemacur Update
  • Currently registered for control of nematodes in
    raspberries.
  • Retailers must stop sale of Nemacur by 5/31/08.
  • Nemacur can still be used by raspberry growers
until further notice. Product availability is
    low.
  • Dont know if/when EPA will cancel registration
(they usually allow several years for product
and/or treated crop to be out of the channels of
    trade before they cancel).

17
New RegistrationsHerbicides
18
Chateau (flumioxazin)
  • Current registrations
  • Bearing Strawberries
  • Non-bearing Raspberries (No blackberries error
    on last years list)
  • Pre-emergence herbicide from Valent
  • Controls a wide range of broadleaf weeds
  • Use pattern
  • Post transplant
  • Directed or Dormancy
  • 365 days between treatment and harvest
  • Blueberry registration pending

19
Section 18 RegistrationStrawberries
  • Spartan (sulfentrazone)
  • Broadleaf weed control in OR and WA
  • EPA has granted Sec. 18 for the past 7 years
  • Three use periods allowed under Section 18
  • Current Sec. 18 in effect until 2/29/08
  • Be mindful of plant-back restrictions with
    Spartan
  • Section 3 registration pending
  • 2008-2009 request likely less Goal is registered

20
Updates and Clarifications
21
Raspberry Crown Borer Control Update
  • Guthion no longer allowed
  • Registered options
  • Diazinon check label for number of
    applications/year allowed
  • Imidacloprid (Admire) new label that includes
caneberries does not list crown borer (just cane
borer) but Admire should be effective for control
of RCB larvae (as per Arkansas data) working
with Bayer on having RCB added to label.
  • Bifenthrin (Brigade 2EC) pre-bloom application
is either soil-applied or foliar (for other
    insects) but not both
  • Note Capture formulation of bifenthrin no
longer manufactured for use in berries Brigade
2EC replaces the old Capture 2EC.
  • Pending
  • Altacor (E2Y45) by Dupont. IR-4 residue field
trials at NWREC conducted in 2006. Not
    registered.
  • Pheromones tested in Oregon again in 2007
    ineffective

22
Updates and Clarifications
  • Prowl/Strawberry
  • Current Preplant and 35 days PHI
  • Propose Post transplant renovation fall,
    dormancy
  • Waiting response from BASF
  • Capture 2EC phasing out to Brigade 2EC in
    Caneberries
  • Other bifenthrin products only BASF lists RCB
  • Casoron (caneberries and blueberries)
  • Granular formulation (4G) currently available
  • Liquid formulation (CS) will be available Fall
    2008

MRL Harmonization
Promote newer, safer pest controls, especially
in developing countries Develop common
approaches for developing and sharing data for
review. Harmonize MRLs around the world to
remove export impediments
300 Participants 60 Countries
29
Recommendations
  • Communication
  • Develop a system to identify crop/pest
    combination needs globally
  • Data Generation for Efficacy and Residue
  • Global zoning based on comparable agro-climatic
    conditions
  • Data Sharing
  • MRL Harmonization
  • Overcome data ownership
