health and 6 million due to workplace injury.

4
Meerkats
  • Meerkats are small furry creatures that live in
a hostile and often dangerous environment.
  • Their environment is akin to that of the
millions of workers that are exposed in a
hazardous workplace on a daily basis.

5
  • To prevent workplace injuries and ill health,
companies must develop a SAFETY CULTURE.

6
How do Meerkats survive?
  • By practicing an inter-dependent culture
  • They learn from each other
  • This culture is what we should aspire in the
    workplace
  • It is always Safety First for the meerkats

7
What is a Safety Culture?
  • It is the way that things are being done in a
    specific environment
  • It is our collective attitude, beliefs and
    behaviour
  • It is the way we behave and how we look out after
    each other

8
  • Developmental stages of a Safety Culture

9
First Stage
  • Dependent Culture
  • Management driven
  • There is little or no employee involvement
  • It is driven and owned by the management

10
Second Stage
  • Independent Culture
  • Increase in employee involvement
  • People value their own safety
  • Injury rates are lower

11
Third Stage
  • Inter-dependent Culture
  • People just dont look out after themselves, but
    for each other also
  • This stage is about team commitment
  • Injuries are at their lowest
  • 100 employee involvement
