1. This is a self-portrait created entirely using
digital tools, Photoshop and Painter8. The title
is Perception colored by Projection a
philosophic commentary on how our interior life
influences how we view the world around us. I
chose the mirroring aspect of the composition
as a method to depict this concept. I work in a
magical realism manner, attempting to convey a
snapshot of dream like images. The images
floating are from a large pencil drawing done in
a prior year, that depicted a numinous encounter
that was significant. The eyes on the shirt
denote shimmering vision.

2. A Photoshop and Painter composition developed
from a series of photos that I took locally. The
roots are from Balboa Park and the sky is one of
many that I capture with my ever-present camera
as I travel through San Diego. Tree of Life
references are part of the design, and relates to
my readings in world myths and stories and
Jungian archetypal dream work. I enjoy the strong
contrast to emphasis the elements.
3
3. I was provided the two photos at the bottom of
the visiting Gandhi family members, which I
adjusted before placement. Gandhi and Martin
Luther King images were acquired and the photo of
the children was captured while I attended a
diversity festival at the World Center in Balboa
Park. Photoshop effects were used to dramatize
the glowing concept of these individuals life
work. I had developed the logo/masthead earlier
in my stay as Vision Magazine cover artist.

4. This is a photo composite from multiple
sources. The fish at bottom began as a photo of
the sand castle festival in Imperial Beach. I
then colorized the sand fish, created a
fractalized cloth texture for the background,
then lens distorted it to form the stretched
ovoid shape around the central figure. The prayer
wheel object is the earth while the moon looks
on.
5
5. This pencil/graphite and colored pencil
drawing (35x46) is meant to suggest the three
ages, infant, maiden, ancient wisdom figure in
the rocks that visually echoes the maiden, and
the feminine cycle of the moon and tides,
birth/death. It was included in a show at the
Gallery Thirteen, formerly at Fifth Ash in
downtown. I used a variety of techniques to
generate different textures for the different
elements. Enjoying the figure/ground pop-out
effect of all the tone outside of the two key
figures.
6
6. I began this composition as another large
(35x46) pencil/colored pencil and watercolor
wash composition, but after the initial design,
decided that the luminosity of color that I
thought this image needed would be very difficult
to achieve by traditional means, so I scanned the
drawing in sections and stitched it together to
create very large digital file (600 megabytes)
with twenty some layers and masks. It is titled,
Impasse, the reluctance to change. As I often
do, there is a large figure embedded in the
image of a woman, to expand issue of meaning.
Photo sources included leaves from my front yard,
scanned wood, while still retaining elements of
the original pencil drawing. Output on archival
paper using wide gamut ink set for color
longevity.

7. This pencil/graphite drawing (35x46)
includes a few of my favorite elements, bird
motifs, water, cats and dreamlike engmatic
contexts and environments. Caught mid-stream
between the choices, the spirit fish moves to
the surface to give guidance. While it is hard to
discern in this printout, I made use of a
technique in which I used a hard pencil to
generate fine gray lines for texture, then went
back over it with soft graphite for the tone.
This leaves delightfully fine soft gray lines
wihtin the dark areas, something I could not have
achieved in any other manner.

8. Entitled, the interior journey, dark to
light I was intent on moving from the left in
full dark to full light on the right, signifying
the creative process of images that move unseen
from within, feeling unfamiliar and ferral
initially, then carefully translated (by the
central figure, pencil in hand) to emerge into
the light of day as an element of beauty and
transformation. My intent was to attempt a
compositional challenge and represent a personal
insight. (23x28)

9. Watercolor and pencil/colored pencil, titled,
Please,... I dont think about her anymore....
The technique of working quickly with wet medium.
The concept of pretending all is well while being
gray in mood, and clearly she lingers in his
thoughts... I featured this image on the
announcement flyers that I created for my
participation in Artwalk 1995, scanning the image
in and then overlaying the added text of the
announcement.(18x26)

10. Watercolor and pencil/colored pencil, titled,
Water of Life, knowledge of death. The
technique of developing this image began like
most of my large compositions. I was aware of an
image pregnant beneath the surface of thought,
did a large free-form scribble on the blank
sheet, then discovered the characters as I went
along. Mixed media allowed saturated colors and
desaturated areas on the right. Again, there is a
large embedded skull image created by the arch of
trees, bush eyes and tree reflection skeletal
mouth. (35x46)
11
11a. Entirely digital in creation, it began with
a photo of an unusual tree along a lagoon in
North County. Using Photoshop, Illustrator and
Painter I tweaked the tree to have a more
armlike appearance, generated the phases of the
moon as vector elements and imported them as
masks, applied effect distortions to the sky, and
included the face as a collection of stars.
Titled Pool of Night, the moon was created
once the pool ripples were set. (18x26)11b. I
thought it had a different potential so this is a
digital variation, one of the aspects that I
enjoyed most about the digital media, unlimited
creative opportunities to try variations. This is
intended to be like a batik or colored
traditional print, and is included to represent
the dynamic nature of the tools. I actually made
many variations but this was the best.
12
12. A surreal photocollage, using photos from my
own archives. The fiery background began as
night shot of a street lamp seen through tree
leaves, then distorted and swirled to create the
fire like aspect and the rising central spirit
figure behind the cnetral cat-woman. Titled
Who speaks for Anima it is part of a personal
series of images.
13
13. This image was created and rendered entirely
within a 3D program, no photo sources were used.
I was given the theme of the issue and nothing
more. I drew my concept on paper, got my editor
to agree to the concept then stared creating
polygons and textures. It is my attempt to
portray the quality of a Lucid Dream, with
exuberant color, dramatic vistas, and the fluid
ease of being able to fly It received a strong
positive response from the readership of the
magazine. The creation of entire 3D worlds and
then the ability to move through them and create
scenes and animations is a remarkable aspects
of digital creation.
14
14. I was given the photo of the pyramid from one
of the magazine staff and the theme of the issue.
I took photos in Old Town of a man painting
childrens faces, then layered and manipulated
the images and created the tree like growth to
match the lines radiating from her forehead. The
boys painting arm is actually the old mans, but
I resized it, re-colored it, put the boys shirt
on to make it appear to be his hand painting on
the girls mouth. Multiple layers and masks were
used to create the transparency effect.
15
This is a pro-bono piece that I did for their
conference several years ago, and will be used
again this year when the conference returns to
S.D. Combining the initials, the Coronado bridge,
sailboats and the brush, it is meant to look like
a wood-cut but is entirely digital in creation.
15. A small selection of the many logos I create
for clients. More examples are available upon
request. I utilize Illustrator as my primary
tool, and Lightwave for the 3D elements.
This foundation appreciated my design and uses it
on all their printed materials.
This is entirely a 3D creation, including the
fabric, pin, thimble and thread
The client loved this, but the board went for
generic script over a picture of S.D. This is
both vector and 3D with animation potential.
The clients name is Speed thus the logo idea.
It was intended as a duotone print job
16
16. I was given a playful horizontal shot of
the group with all members strung out in a long
ribbon entirely in grayscale. I cut the image
apart, composed the players, elaborated the
background, then colorized the original grayscale
photo image to its current colorful aspect. The
group was pleasantly surprised with the effect
and it solved the graphic design problem of
taking a horizontal ribbon and re-purposing it
into a vertical panel and the editor was thrilled
with the transformation.
17
17. I was given the single image of the natural
artist, lower left corner who was the featured
article in the magazine. the editor did not want
it to dominate in a salacious manner. The photos
include the reflecting pond from Balboa Park, the
foliage from either side of the San Diego River,
bird in foreground from another river shot, sky
was one of my many collected moments. Only the
eagle came from stock. The ethereal spirit
figure in the center clouds evolved. Digital
manipulation provides enormous creative
potential, if I am alert to the happy accidents
just as in traditional art creation.
18
18. This image is a screen shot of the wireframe
model created in Lightwave, a wonderful place to
play with digital clay I have always modeled in
plasticine, so the skills of 3 dimensional
construction are applied to the digital
environment. Eventually textured, animated and
rendered in the proper context of a constructed
environment this will become a central character
in an animation short that I am working on, based
on a book I wrote and illustrated. The many
challenges include balanced 3 dimension
structure, correct polygon flow that follows
natural lines of anatomy on the object modeled,
rigging, lighting, texturing, and then animation.
I am moving strongly into this area of
development and include 3D modeling for client
logo work.
19
19. Included on the web site is a page of
animations as a demonstration of these skills. I
have included a Flash animation to represent
some of the work that I do with Flash components
on web sites. The RSP fly-in is a 3D logo for a
client who wanted a combination of playful then
sophisticated. He is very pleased as this image
is on the splash page before you enter his
site. There are websites on the main page that
have more variety of Flash elementshttp//www.ha

20. This is an example of one of the many
commercial, page layout projects that I do. This
particular flyer is going out as a mailer to
5,000 clients in Orange County. I was responsible
for the entire layout/design, digital asset
management, coordination with other ad designers
and some in-house work by clients. I did the
final composition and prepped it for press, and
generated the full scale proof, and the CD with
all of the associated files. I was also
responsible for those ads that have a lime-green
star for reference. In each case a very different
client had their expectations regarding what an
ad for their company should look like. Please
review the hardcopy to see the detail and
quality.
