Why visit the rainforest?
  • The tropical rainforest has warm temperatures
    year-round.
  • There is a variety of species not only in
    animals, but plants as well.
  • This biome is located all over the world, so your
choices of where to stay vary.

3
Where is this biome located?
  • All near the equator
  • Mostly found in South America and West Africa.
  • Other locations include Indonesia, Malaysia,
    Southern India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan

4
What is the climate like in this biome?
  • This biome, no matter where you are, the
  • temperature is always warm. There is lots of
  • rainfall in this biome so you may enjoy the
  • warm weather and the rain at the same time.
  • The average rainfall is between 40 and 120
  • inches.

5
What are the species in the rainforest?
  • In the rainforest there is a variety of species.
  • There are so many that you may find some
  • you have never see or heard of. The are 112,000
  • plant species, 2,700 animal species, 204
  • primate species, and at least 30 million insect
  • species.

6
What are some animals in the rainforest?
  • Lotens Sunbird of Sri Lanka similar to a
hummingbird drink nectar from small flowers,
have medium sized, curved beaks to reach the
    nectar.
  • Butterflies and moths protect themselves by
camouflaging after they have landed on leaves.
  • Rhinoceros Hornbill of Malaysia eat large seeds
    w/its semi-long, pointed beak.

7
Animals continued
  • Jaguar of Belize their spotted coats help them
blend in w/the rainforest floor, making easier
    for them to hunt.
  • Three-toed sloth of Central America host to
algae which turn its fur green helping it hide in
the leaves, protecting it form predators.
  • Eyelash viper of Costa Rica has adapted to feed
on forest prey, survive in its climate w/its
    color its easier to hunt.

8
The soil of the rainforest
  • People used to think the soils were fertile
because so many plants used to grow.
  • By deforestation the soil no longer gets the
nutrients it needs b/c it used to get it from the
    trees.
  • The soils are now not the good b/c of the
    deforestation.

9
How has man effected the rainforest?
  • Logging, farming, deforestation
  • Sometimes the government understands the
    fragility of the rainforest.
  • Men hunt the animals for their fur, meat or
    teeth, endangering these species.
  • Framers burn acres of land to have enough room
    for their crops.
  • Settlers and natives continue to build rods into
the rainforest so they can access lumber-rich
    land and plant crops
