Title: Locating and Capturing Mammals

1
Locating and Capturing Mammals (What I know
after 15 years of doing this)
2
Why?
Every year, we are approached by
companies/organizations that want us to conduct
basic mammalian surveys. Also, I cant count
the number of research projects that have been
ruined by an inability to capture the targeted
species. Remember many parts of the world/nation
remain poorly known.
3
If Looking for Specimens
  • Molecular Trapping
  • Road Kills
  • Pack Rat Middens
  • Historic Records (Photographs, Harvest Data,
    Military Records)
  • High School Biology Teachers
  • Lay Naturalists
  • Public Board of Health (Rabies Labs)
  • Critter Wanted Posters
  • Ant Hills
  • Pest Control/Dog Catchers

4
Insectivores
Shrews
Moles
  • Pest Control Operations
  • Particularly Golf Courses
  • Walk Cliff Lines
  • Empty Bottles
  • Owl Pellets
  • Pit-Fall Traps
  • Set Traps Along Logs

5
Bats
  • Standard Trapping Techniques
  • Mist-Nets
  • Harp/Tuttle Traps
  • Roost Capture
  • Bat Detectors
  • Shooting (Without Endangered Species)
  • Rabies Lab
  • Check Potential Roosts
  • Old Buildings (Ask Local Historical Societies)
  • Caves (National Speleological Society Grotto)
  • Bridges (Both Day and Night)
  • Bat Boxes
  • High School Teachers

6
Carnivores
  • Standard Trapping Techniques
  • Leg-Holds
  • Box Traps
  • Tracking Stations
  • Photo Stations
  • Rabies Lab
  • Road Kills
  • Hunters/Trappers
  • Game Calling
  • Commercial Fur Trappers
  • Taxidermists
  • USDA/APHIS
  • Historic Records

7
Game Animals
  • Natural Resource Agencies Rarely Issue Permits
  • Direct Observation
  • Spotting Scope
  • Camera Stations
  • Road Kills
  • Historic/Archaeological Records
  • Legal Hunters
  • Hunting Lodges/Clubs
  • Taxidermists
  • State Records
  • High School Teachers

8
Rodents
  • Owl Pellets
  • Pest Control Companies
  • Standard Trapping Techniques
  • Box Traps (Sherman)
  • Museum Special
  • Rat Traps
  • Victor Mouse Traps

9
Trapping Techniques
  • Kill vs Live Trapping
  • Simple Transects
  • Trap Webs
  • Trap Grids
  • Selected Sites
  • Methodology Should be Determined by Question
  • If Wanting To Compare Habitats Be Standardized
  • If Simply Looking For Presence Absence Data
  • Can Still Use Standardized Approach
  • This Will Allow Later Comparisons
  • Also Consider Biasing Trapping Toward Target
    Species

10
Simple Transects
  • Easy to Set and Relocate
  • Work Best in Open Areas (i.e. Great Plains)
  • Random
  • Systematic
  • Intentionally Biased Toward Success
  • Set Traps in Runways
  • Select Edge Cover
  • Fencerows
  • Wood Lines
  • Sides of Trails
  • Beside Fields During Harvest
  • Target Times of High Abundance (Late Summer)

11
Trap Webs
  • Trap Density is High in the Core
  • Very Useful for Targeted Locations
  • Requires Careful Design
  • Notice you Basically Have a Multiple Intersecting
    Transects

12
Trap Grids
  • Density is Consistent Throughout
  • Probably the Best Design for Making Direct
    Comparisons
  • Relatively Easy to Set
  • Notice you Basically Have a Multiple Intersecting
    Transects
