Title: Horniman Museum

1
Horniman Museum
  • Horniman Museum was set up by Frederick Horniman.
  • It opened in 1901 and was dedicated with the
surrounding land as a gift to the people of
    London.
  • Mr. Horniman made the museum free to people who
wanted to look at the collections of artefacts he
    had found around the world.
  • Frederick John Horniman was a Victorian tea
trader who travelled around the world in the
    1860's.
  • As his collections increased they outgrew the
family home and in 1898 Mr. Horniman commissioned
    the new Museum.

2
Horniman Museum
  • Horniman Museum has some interesting buildings
  • A Victorian Annex in the style of the old Crystal
Palace and a modern building with a grass roof.

3
Horniman Museum
  • Horniman Museum also has a collection of animals
    and birds in the gardens.

4
Horniman Museum
  • Horniman Museum has a large collection of natural
history specimens, e.g. animal skeletons and
    stuffed animals.
  • We visited the museum to see the musical
instruments because it has the largest collection
    in the UK.
  • You can find musical instruments from all over
the world in the Horniman Museum.

5
Horniman MuseumMusical Instruments
  • We were lucky to take part in a workshop led by
    an expert from the museum.
  • We had the opportunity to play several new and
    different instruments.

6
Gumboye Drumfrom West Africa
  • This drum is also called the Speaking Drum.
  • You hit it with a beater and can change the pitch
by squeezing the strings on the outside of the
    drum tight.
  • As you change the pitch you can make it sound
    like someone is talking.
  • Margaret said welcome in Yoruba and tried to
reproduce the sound on the drum.

7
Drumsfrom around the world
  • We also played a Dumbelek Drum from Turkey
(middle) and a Snare Drum from Morocco (left).

8
Horogaifrom Pacific Ocean
  • Horogai or Conch trumpets are made of shells. A
small hole it made in the side or at end of the
shell and you make a noise by blowing a
    raspberry into the hole.
  • They are probably used to call people, maybe
    fishermen.

9
Horogaifrom Pacific Ocean
  • Some of us were better at making a sound than
    others!
  • Those of us who are learning to play a brass
instrument were the best and could play different
    pitch sounds.

10
Singing Bowlsfrom Tibet
  • Singing Bowls are played either by striking them
or by rubbing the stick around the outside of the
    bowl.
  • They are used by Buddhists to help them meditate.

11
Ektarfrom India
  • The Ektar means one stringed instrument.
  • It is played by plucking the string and squeezing
the wooden frame to make different pitch sounds.
  • You place it on your shoulder to play so that you
    can hear the notes.
