  • Animal confinement areas (open lots, feedlots,
    cow yards, medication pens)
  • Manure storage areas (lagoons, retention ponds,
    stock-piles, compost piles)

Requirements for Swine, Poultry, and Veal
Operations

No Discharge from Production Area
  • Exceptions to no-discharge policy
  • 25-year, 24-hour rainfall event (beef and dairy
    existing swine, veal, and poultry)
  • 100-year, 24-hour rainfall event (new swine,
    veal, and poultry)
  • Exceptions require compliance with all other
    provisions of the rule.

Best Management Practices
  • Keeping the water clean
  • Maintain waterers prevent overflow, prevent,
    and repair leaks
  • Maintain vegetated filter strips prevent
    submersion in water and soil saturation
  • Control roof water use protected gutters
  • Maintain diversions, berms, or land grading to
    prevent surface runoff.

Inspection Requirements
  • Weekly inspections of storm water diversion
    devices, runoff collection structures, waste
    storage structures, and manure or runoff
    transporting systems.
  • Daily inspections of waterlines
  • Installation of depth markers in storage areas
  • Keep records of deficiencies or discharges, and
    address deficiencies as soon as possible.

Record-Keeping Requirements
  • Maintain a complete copy of
  • Design
  • Inspection
  • Problem correction
  • Mortality disposal
  • All records must be kept for 5 years.

    you are in compliance with the new federal CAFO
    regulations.

Time Line for Compliance
  • Some provisions took effect upon adoption of the
    rule on April 14, 2003 others will not take
    effect until 2006.
