WP3 Target
  • Target of the project
  • To create regional pilots
  • -- To demonstrate bioenergy harvesting and use
    to produce heat or
  • heat and power
  • Biofuels in the project
  • -- Forest chips - residues from final fellings
    and thinnings
  • -- Forest residues from forest industry bark,
    sawdust etc.
  • -- Agriobiomasses, for example reed canary
    grass and straw
  • Regions in the project
  • North Karelia in Finland
  • Eberswalde in Brandenburg in Germany
  • La Gerdnya in Catalonia in Spain
  • Svencionys in Lithuania
  • Castelo de Vide in Portugal

1. Regional feasibility study - contents
  • 1. General overview of the region 2 - 3 pages
  • 1.1 Location, infrastructure, climate
    conditions
  • 1.2 Present energy market - industry,
    household, municipal, service sector
  • 1.3 Future trends of energy market
  • 2. Identification of key players and other basic
    facts 4 - 6 pages
  • 2.1 Authorities Environmental, agriculture,
    forest, industry, RD, finance
  • 2.2 Industry - forest, energy, agriculture,
    transportation,
  • 2.2 Associations
  • 2.3 Legislation, taxes, education level in
the area and in the country etc.
  • Instruction for the work Name and contact
address of the companies and authorities is
    presented
  • 3. Assessment of biofuel harvesting potential in
    the region 5 10 pages
  • 3.1 Forest resources Forest area and timber
    production volume
  • 3.2 Forest industry Companies and their
    products
  • 3.3 Potential of forest industry residues -
    Bark, sawdust and shavings etc.
  • 3.4 Potential of logging residues from final
    fellings (tops, branches etc)

5
An example of wood fuel potential table
  • Annual roundwood surplus
  • gross annual increment (natural losses
    fellings).
  • The unit is solid m3 stem wood with bark.
  • Stump and logging residue yields can be estimated
from roundwood felling volumes with given
    percentages (see table below)
  • Technical potential yield of surplus means that
share of surplus which could be harvested for
energy purposes after for example ecological or
    techno-economical limitations

6
Biological potential gt Technical potentialSome
issues which limit the potential
  • Bonity class of the soil, residues must not be
    removed from poor soils
  • Tree species, logging residues are collected
    mainly from the spruce stands
  • Yield, 65 is harvested
  • Terrain classes, not from wet, steep etc.
    difficuls sites
  • Roadside storage loss, 4
  • Willingness of land owner to give away the
    residues

7
An example of biofuel production table for
sawmills etc.
  • If there isnt more exact information, the
following conversion factors can be used
  • 1 loose cubic meter bark or sawdust 0,6 MWh
  • 1 wet ton (MC 50) other wood 2,5 MWh

8
1. Regional feasibility study contents (to be
continued)
  • 4. Problems 1 page
  • 4.1. The problems which limit the usage of
    biofuels
  • 5. Assessment of the biofuel market potential in
    the region 6 pages
  • 5.1 Assessment of biofuel consumption at the
    moment - Amount and plants
  • 5.2 Biofuel consumption potential - heating
    plants, CHP plants and industry
  • 5.3 Evaluation of biofuel price Forest
industry residues and logging residue chips,
    agrobiomasses
  • 5.4 Promising biofuel consumption sites
    Names and locations
  • Instruction for the work - see the example in the
    next page
  • 6. Description of biofuel harvesting technology
    at the moment 4-5 pages
  • 6.1 Harvesting technology for timber Cutting
and delimbing, terrain haulage and road transport
  • 6.2 Harvesting technology of wood fuel
Forest industry residues and logging residue
    chips
  • 6.3 Harvesting technology of agrobiomasses -
    Straw and reed canary grass
  • 7. Recommendation for the regional biofuel
    strategy 2 pages
  • 7.1 Target for 2010 and 2015 for wood fuel
use Forest industry residues and logging
    residue chips

Regional feasibility study - Implementation
  • Pilot project leaders are responsible for the
    regional pilot projects
  • The role of VTT and METLA in the feasibility
    study
  • - to support the region pilot members in
    feasibility study
  • VTT supports regional study in
  • - Eberswalde in Brandenburg in
  • - Svencionys in Lithuania
  • METLA supports the regional study in
  • - North Karelia in
  • - La Gerdnya in Catalonia in Spain
  • - Castelo de Vide in Portugal
  • Meetings once or twice during the feasibility
    study phase?
  • - Target in the meeting would be to discuss about
the contents and implementation of the study
  • - The meeting would take place in each region
  • - The first meeting would take place at the
training session in Finland, in Friday 17th of
    June
