thoughtful, the joyful, and the painful sides of

5
Smoky Nightby Eve Bunting
  • The bookleaves out so much of the
history of the riots, that they seem unfounded
and decontexualized. Bunting's portrayal of this
event is shallow and borders on racistThis book
is an example of how beautiful illustrations can
lead to a Caldecott seal and the book can still
    have an awful story.

6
Silent to the Boneby E. L. Konigsburg
  • Although this book is supposedly a
children's book, the 13 year old boy is sexually
involved with a 20 year old girl. Descriptions
of him "accidentally" walking in on her in the
bathtub are described. It describes her having
    sex with her boyfriend.
  • The author of this book should be ashamed.
This book doesn't belong in any child (or adults)
    hands.

7
Dreamlandby Sarah Dessen
  • This book is a clear window into abusive
relationships,. but if you are just looking for
a good read.... Let's just say that if you like
depressing books about drugs and abusive
boyfriends, you might like this story. If you
don't fall into those categories, stay clear of
    this book.

8
Looking For Alaskaby John Green
  • In Green's world, substance abuse sometimes
has serious consequences, but sex has no price
tag. No doubt fifteen year olds will eat this
stuff up. It is the ideal reinforcement for the
normal follies of adolescence. Green pushes all
the right buttons for teenage readers. But is
this kind of pandering the best we can offer?

9
Why Realistic Fiction?
  • If you have read a hundred books, you have
    lived a hundred lives.
