CONTACT
  • Contact is the recognition of, and the coping
with, the other, the different, the new, the
strange. It is not a state we are in or out
of...but an activity. I make contact on the
boundary between me and the other. The boundary
is where we touch and at the same time experience
    separateness.
  • Laura Perls 1978

5
Characteristics of Abduction

  • To develop guidelines for investigators and to
learn more about the nature and content of
    abductions

19
Scientific Studies
  • Hall/FUFOR study - 50 subjects.
  • Typical abductee recalls fragmentary memories of
    dream-like occurrences
  • Abductees often have memory blocks that are
    distressing
  • Hypnosis does not necessarily provide
    verification of the abduction experience
  • Not all abductees are equally traumatized

20
Scientific Studies

    Phenomenon

    Reporting UFO Abduction
  • Subjects Completed MMPI
  • Subjects from LA UFO Research and Support Group

24
Scientific Studies
  • Kopeland Stone study found abductees
  • Identified themselves as intelligent, worthwhile,
and having a sense of humor
  • Practiced meditation
  • 50 reported insomnia
  • Reported feeling optimistic and energetic yet
    also anxious, restless, and conflicted

25

  • June O. Parnell Ph.D.
  • University of Wyoming - 1986
  • Personality Characteristics of the MMPI, 16PF and
ACL of Persons who Claim UFO Experiences

26
Scientific Studies
  • Parnell Study found abductees
  • Self-sufficient, honest, and resourceful
  • Above average intelligence, assertive,
    experimenting thinkers, defensive
  • No psychopathology

27
Scientific Studies
  • There is some evidence from my own work that when
abductees can overcome their terror and accept
fully the reality of what they are undergoing the
phenomenon shifts to one that is less
    traumatic....useful information about fundamental
ecological and other global dangers is passed on
to the abductees who may experience profound
emotional and spiritual growth. More studies of
these dimensions of the phenomenon, undertaken
with an open mind, are very much needed.

    Psychiatrically
  • Proceedings. Abduction Study Conference. MIT,
    June 13-17, 1992.

Cultural and Historic Reports
  • Can dreams be nothing more than a confusion of
    the mind?
  • A No-Mans Land of nonsense....
  • When we leave the world behind
  • Pursued by terrors we explore an unfamiliar place
  • And live the drama of a life all in a moments
    space.
  • Are dreams the crazy images of a blurred and
    senseless thought?
  • I sometimes think that when we dream, some part
    of us is caught
  • between two worlds, the earthly and the realm of
    the unseen.
  • Anonymous

Cultural and Historical Reports
  • Records of non-human entities that have
    interacted with humans throughout history

with the appearance of fire all around within
itand from the appearance of his waist and

48
The BIG Picture
  • On July 1, 2001 the United States was home to
284,796,887 persons. It has been estimated that 1
in 50 of this population has had abduction-type
    experiences
  • Presidents, military officers, senators, and
other highly-placed people have voiced their
    concerns
  • Scientists have added their objective data

49
The BIG Picture
  • The Abduction Phenomenon is real
  • It has been ongoing for centuries, in every
    culture, down through recorded history
  • This is not a new phenomenon
  • To understand the phenomenon, new studies need to
    be conducted
  • Interdisciplinary research teams needed

50
The BIG Picture
  • What can we learn from this?
  • The world, and in particular the United States,
considers itself at war with the entities causing
the abductions and have put in place all the
    conditions that accompany war secrecy,
    penalties, regulations, and subterfuge
  • Covering it up does not make it go away
