Objectives
  • Discuss factors that are important in the design
    of bedrooms
  • Plan the size and location of closets for a
    typical residence
  • Apply spatial considerations in planning a room
    arrangement
  • Implement important design considerations for
    bathrooms and bedrooms
  • Plan a bathroom that follows solid design
    principals

Sleeping Area
  • Usually around 1/3 of home
  • Includes bedrooms, bathrooms, and nurseries, etc.
  • Quieter part of home
  • Often located S/SW part of home to take advantage
    of summer breezes

Bedrooms
  • So important that homes are referred to by number
    of bedrooms (2,3,4)
  • 100 square feet is minimum recommended size
  • Average size between 125 and 175 square feet
  • Larger rooms give options to include things like
  • desk set
  • Exercise equipment
  • Comfy chair or couch
  • Larger dressers, etc.

Bedroom specs
  • DOORS Usually 6 8 high
  • 2 6 3 WIDE
  • 1 3/8 thick
  • Locating a door near a corner of the room usually
    results in less wasted space
  • Doors should swing inwards
  • Should be located close to bathrooms
  • Handicap considerations
  • More space around bed (3)
  • 10 13 under bed needed for wheelchair
    footrests
  • 5 square in front of closet for turning
  • Mattress same height as chair
  • Etc.

Bedroom Closets
  • Each bedroom should have a closet
  • Suggested space is
  • 4 linear feet for males
  • 6 linear feet for females (more things to hang
    up)
  • 24 deep MINIMUM
  • 30 depth is normal
  • Should be located on interior walls to provide
    noise insulation does not reduce exterior wall
    space
  • Special considerations for handicapped.

Master Bedrooms
  • Usually have own private bathroom
  • Often have walk-in closet
  • Sometimes located away from the other bedrooms
    (ie, downstairs while the other rooms are
    upstairs, etc.)
  • Split-bedroom plan

BATHROOMS
  • All homes require at least 1 bathroom
  • Most have 1 ½ or more
  • Ideally, each bedroom would have its own bathroom
  • Not always realistic
  • 2-story house ideally has at least a half bath on
    each level
  • Full bath by bedrooms
  • Located back-to-back for convenience of
    installation (plumbing), but not necessary
  • Sometimes directly above to save costs.
  • 6 walls space for plumbing

  • Includes
  • Toilet (aka Water Closet)
  • Lavatory (sink/faucet)

  • Toilet (Water Closet)
  • Lavatory (Sink/faucet)
  • Shower Stall

  • Toilet

  • Bathtub w/shower
  • Sometimes Jacuzzi/whirlpool type tubs

  • Minumum Size 5 x 7 or 5 x 8
  • Larger 10 x 10, 10 x 12, or larger
  • DOOR 2 4 3
  • If your design allows for 1 bath use common
    hallway
  • Dont go through a bedroom to get to a bathroom

  • Require 30 for installation
  • Older style- 2 separate units
  • New Wall or floor mount
  • Homes, usually floor-mounted

    depending on make, model, and application

  • Test/Reset outlets
  • Help prevent electrocution
  • Required within 3 of any water source
  • Switches Cannot be reached from tub
  • Dont use hairdryer in tub
  • If hairdryer or curling iron falls into tub
    UNPLUG.dont reach in to get it!!!!
