Hate crimes are criminal actions intended to harm
or intimidate people because of their race,
ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or other
minority group status. They are also referred to
as bias crimes.
The number of organized hate groups in the US
increases 20 a year, according to the Southern
Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, AL. Nearly
9,000 hate crimes, more than half of them
motivated by race, were reported to the Federal
Bureau of Investigation in 1996 compared to 7,947
incidents in 1995, and 5,932 incidents in 1994.
Hate Groups include Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazi,
Skinhead, Christian Identity, Black Separatists
and other.

Symbols can evoke very powerful feelings and
meanings. They help unite a group and spread
their hateful messages.

  • Words can be just as powerful/dangerous as
symbols. There are certain words we have heard
in our study of Civil Rights that we know are
taboo in society today because of their negative
    connotation.
  • When reading/listening to the news, pay
attention to the adjectives chosen. Often
loaded words are used in the expectation that
they will invoke a preconceived notion/belief you
    hold.
  • Activity Each group has a blurb from the news.
  • Based, just on what you have in front of you
determine guilt or innocence of the teens.
  • Circle the loaded words designed to trigger
    peoples prejudices.

Two teenagers have been accused of stabbing a man
in the parking lot of a suburban mall.
According to eyewitnesses, the stabbing was
accidental. The unarmed teens were held up at
knifepoint as they left the mall with their
purchases. The would-be robber was stabbed when
the teens attempted to free themselves and escape
to the safety of their car.

We have been conditioned to feel /expect
certain things when we hear the loaded words
often used by the media. When we studied primary
document analysis you were taught to think of who
created it and why- what was their purpose? You
should always look for the authors bias. Even
when researching think -am I getting the whole
story? Be especially wary of this when
researching on the web!!!!!!! The internet is a
powerful tool for hate groups!
