Title: Mise en Scene

1
Chapter 1
  • Mise en Scene

2
Origin
  • As we discussed previously the term is used
differently but Film is rooted in Film
  • Setting - in film it is either where film is
shot in a Man Made or Natural environment
  • Shot (an uninterupted sequence of imagery)

3
Mise en Scene- Setting
  • Now can commonly see sets that are composed with
    a Green Screen or Matt-
  • Which means it is at least two settings one is in
front of a green screen room and the other is
    computer generated
  • And then composited or super imposed

4
Mise en Scene- Setting
  • In TV The meteorologist is a good example of
compositing with a green screen. The computer
fills in the green screen area
  • Now we have computers composited entire 3D worlds
    with movement .
  • Everything in Green becomes that world.

5
Mise en Scene- Setting
  • D.W. Griffiths Babylon and Birth of a Nation are
good examples of some of the first major Settings
    that was man made
  • Sometime Settings are not Made Perfectly
intentionally ie. Tim Burtons Nightmare before
    Christmas 93
  • Settings indicate Place and Time

6
Mise en Scene- Setting
  • Sometimes representing the Past or Future
  • Ie. Godfather where the scene shifts to Cuba and
the weather is warm with Michael Driving a 1950s
    Cheverolet
  • Basic Shots - Framing Loose - when there is
abundant space in the frame around the subject

7
Basic Shots -In Setting
  • Tight is where there is very little space other
    than the subject
  • Settings reveal Characters and they also
establish Mood and they also establish Mood such
as the opening scenes of Blood Simple

8
Subjects-
  • Subjects in Fictional Film are usually the films
    character
  • Where as in a documentary the shots are concerned
    with Real People
  • Appearance Divulges Character, Makeup, Hairstyle,
    Clothing all reinforces the character
  • Some Actors study Method Acting where they try
to get inside the charaters psyche- People
like Dennis Hopper, Harrison Ford, Gene Hackman
all started as character Actors and became stars.
