  • Each black bear needs a territory of about 50
    square miles.
  • Black bear population in the Ozarks of Arkansas
and Missouri was eliminated by the early 1900s
because of hunting and deforestation. In the
1950s ecosystem engineers brought black bears
from Minnesota to repopulate the area.
  • Cubs are born in January or February and are
blind, hairless, and small (10-14 cm long).
  • When the cubs are 1.5 years old, they become
    independent.
  • Over the last month, Animal Control has trapped
15 black bears in Northwest Arkansas.

  • An adult bear can kill an adult elk with one
swipe of their paw to break the elks neck.
  • Black bears wont attack humans unless they are
    scared, wounded, or cornered.
  • Predators include other black bears, man, grizzly
bears, and the American alligator. Coyote and
cougars may prey on cubs. Traffic is also a major
cause of mortality in Florida alone, more than
100 bears are killed on roads each year.
  • An adult black bear can throw a baseball over 80
    miles! Just kidding.

  • Smokey Bear, the U.S. Forest Service mascot, is
based on a real black bear cub found in New
