  • Give Your Science Teaching A(nother) Good Kick In
    The Arts
  • Poetry, Music and Song in the Physics Lab

Presented by Tony (Haggis) Henderson

What is todays plan?
  • The Projectile Song
  • One on f the optics song
  • Quantum Physics Sea Shanty
  • The Satellite Song
  • The Quantum Particle Argument song
  • The Quantum Wave Argument song
  • The Quantum Truth song
  • all with choruses
  • and
  • Homework

3
  • Projectiles

4
Projectiles
  • About projectile motion
  • To the tune The Old Folks at Home by Stephen
    Foster
  • C is a comfortable key to sing it in

5
Projectiles verse 1
  • When a thing is thrown and it zips off
  • It will chase a parabolic arc
  • We can do this with a gun or ball
  • Or even Fidos stick when in the park

6
Projectiles - Chorus
  • Horizontally, its speed is set
  • Of acceleration that way, it is free
  • Vertically, everything thats not held up
  • Accelerates to earth, with value g

7
Projectiles verse 2
  • An object thats not held up by anything
  • Will plunge to earth like concrete in free-fall
  • As well as that, in a horizontal sense
  • There is no force that pushes it at all

8
Projectiles - Chorus
  • Horizontally, its speed is set
  • Of acceleration that way, it is free
  • Vertically, everything thats not held up
  • Accelerates to earth, with value g

9
Projectiles verse 3
  • Projectiles are objects that are in the air
  • Free from almost all external force
  • We ignore all lift and thrust and drag but we
  • Must include the vector, weight, of course

10
Projectiles - Chorus
  • Horizontally, its speed is set
  • Of acceleration that way, it is free
  • Vertically, everything thats not held up
  • Accelerates to earth, with value g

11
Projectiles verse 4
  • To find the range of anything thats thrown about
  • We need to find the time until it lands
  • The vertical velocity, when t is nought
  • Combined with g will put it in our hands

12
Projectiles - Chorus
  • Horizontally, its speed is set
  • Of acceleration that way, it is free
  • Vertically, everything thats not held up
  • Accelerates to earth, with value g

13
Projectiles verse 5
  • Finally, now we know our time of flight
  • And the constant horizontal speed
  • We can find the distance til the object drops
  • And thus we then have all the stuff we need

14
Projectiles Chorus (last time)
  • Horizontally, its speed is set
  • Of acceleration that way, it is free
  • Vertically, everything thats not held up
  • Accelerates to earth, with value g

15
  • 1 on f

16
One on fThe Des Cartes optics formula
  • This song helps students learn the Des Cartes
    optics formula
  • It also helps students understand the meaning and
importance of values for do, di and f when they
are both greater than and less than zero.
  • There is still a line that I am not entirely
happy with but when I think of a better one, Ill
    replace it. No luck yet.
  • The tune is Daddy Sang Bass by Carl Perkins
  • F is a comfortable key to sing it in.

17
One on fPronunciation guide
  • Des Cartes Day Cart
  • di die
  • do dough

18
One on f verse 1
  • In optics old Des Cartes gave us all a great head
    start
  • When he joined the three ideas f, di and do
  • To find the link was tough but Des Cartes was
    good enough
  • He found reciprocals the way to go

19

25
One on f verse 2
  • Theres stuff we need to know
  • What are f and di and do?
  • What they stand for we should keep in mind
  • do for objects range and dis the images one
    word changed
  • f, the focal length I know youll find

32
One on f verse 3
  • For problems you can do, youll be given any two
  • And then the missing one must then be sought
  • The same denominator will make life better
    later
  • And use reciprocals like youve been taught

One on f verse 4
  • The sign for each of these is something ON which
    you should seize
  • A minus means a virtual f or di
  • In this case dos a hero never less than zero
  • Thats something on which we can all rely
