  • Pg. 672-678

2
Constellations
  • Definition grouping of stars that has a shape
resembling an animal, mythological character, or
    other familiar object.

3
Absolute and Apparent Magnitudes
  • Apparent magnitude is how bright a start looks.
  • Depends on how far the star is from earth
  • Absolute magnitude is the actual brightness of
    the star.

4
Determining the Distance to Stars
  • Stars near the Earth seem to move compared to
more-distant stars as Earth revolves around the
    sun.
  • This apparent shift in position is called
    parallax.
  • Using parallax and math, astronomers can
    calculate distance to the stars

5
Determining a stars temperature and Composition
  • Stars are classified by temperature
  • We see temperature differences as colors.
  • Hot stars are blue-white stars
  • Cool stars are orange or red
  • As light is radiated from a stars atmosphere,
some of its absorbed by elements.
