Beginning the essay.
  • Use the information on your sheets for the
following 3 areas as the beginning of your essay.
    Do not use sub titles!
  • Marketing a film
  • Planning a promotional campaign for a film
  • What does a trailer do?

3
Moving on
  • Write a paragraph explaining that you are going
to be analysing the trailer for Romeo and
    Juliet.
  • Give some information about the film in this
paragraph who directed it (Baz Luhrmann),when
it was released (1996), who starred in it
(Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes), what it is
    about (very briefly!)

4
Next.
  • Explain that there are lots of different camera
angles and positions used in the trailer.
  • Remember you have a sheet explaining about these.
  • Write an explanation about the way that this is
done in 3-5 frames (you should already have notes
for this in your book if you havent, I have
included 4 frames you could write about on the
    next 4 slides.)
  • C grade students say why as well as what.

Moving on again.
  • As well as frames from the film itself we see
  • some text during the trailer on still images.
  • What words do we see? Is there anything you can
say about the font? I have copied the frames onto
the next slides in this ppt to help you.
  • Why do you think these stills are in the trailer?
  • Why are they on the screen for a longer time than
    the other frames?
  • Why is the title of the film shown more than once?

Now analyse the use of Sound in the Trailer
  • The next part of your essay needs to analyse
what, how and why certain sound elements are used
    in the trailer.
  • Use the notes you have already made and the
information on the following slides to help you.
  • Remember that C grade students say why as well
    as what.

21
The Importance of Sound
  • The extra dimension that sound adds to a film has
been acknowledged since the early days of cinema,
when live music in the form of a piano, organ or
even a full orchestra accompanied the images on
    the silent cinema screen.
  • Sound on film today is of course much more
    sophisticated with a digital synchronised
soundtrack combining the elements of dialogue,
    music and sound effects (SFX).

22
Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sound
  • The world of the film as we see it in the trailer
is known as the diegetic world.
  • We can see only a section of this world the
events which the filmmaker has chosen to include
    in each frame.
  • However, as a modern-day, cinema-going audience
we accept that there are things taking place
around the edges of what we see on screen. For
instance, if a character has gone to make a cup
of tea, we accept that they have gone to the
kitchen which is part of the film house in
which they live. However, they are still part of
the film world we are watching although they are
    out of vision.

23
  • Diegetic sound is sound which is part of the film
world we are watching. This includes
  • dialogue (Well Juliet, I will lie with thee
    tonight.)
  • sound effects which come from a source within the
film world (police siren, breaking glass,
    gunshot.)
  • Diegetic sound can occur either on screen or off
screen in other words we can either see the
person or object that is making the sound (on
screen) or we dont (off screen).
  • Non-diegetic sound is sound which we do not
recognise as part of the film world. This
    includes
  • The electric guitar intro.
  • Desree singing Kissing You.
  • The uptempo instrumental used in the middle
    section

24
Analysing the trailer conclusion
  • Write a paragraph that sums up your opinions
about the trailer for Romeo and Juliet.
  • Think back to what you wrote about the purpose of
a film trailer in paragraph 3.
  • Is this, in your opinion, a successful film
    trailer? WHY?

25
Attention To Detail!
  • In order to achieve a grade D your essay must be
paragraphed and show that you have an awareness
of subject specific vocabulary that means using
    the right words.
  • In order to achieve a grade C your essay must do
both of the above and have very few errors in
    spelling, punctuation and grammar.
