Title: The Homophobia Stops Here

1
The Homophobia Stops Here
  • The Null and Hidden Curriculum

2
What schools do not teach
  • Through what isnt taught and how it is taught,
large segments of the population are being
discriminated against by the hidden and null
    curricula Sawyer Norris, 2004.

Homophobia
  • is an unjustified or unreasonable fear of the
    unknown
  • Homophobia can be anything from an inward
feeling of disgust or hatred towards people who
are LGBT or ex-gay, to an outward verbal display
    of disapproval or even violence.

5
  • I can see the change in body language when I
talk to some of my heterosexual friends about my
struggle with homosexuality. Their arms get
folded over their chest and their head looks down
as if to say lets not talk about this anymore.

6
  • Research from the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight
Education Network (GLSEN) found that 84 of LGBT
students report being verbally harassed because
    of their sexual orientation

7
Murder
  • Matthew Shepard
  • 21-year-old college student beaten and
  • killed because he was gay.

8
Suicide
  • This world cannot remain so hard to live in and
to have hope in -- not for all the "Bill's" who
are out there now, and all who are yet to come.
  • After Bill's death I found in one of his
notebooks, he had written, "This is not my
choice. This is not forced upon me. This just is."

Silence is where the hate grows that killed my
son.

  • It was a shock when my mate told me he was gay.
Ive known him since school and Id never
guessed. At first I thought he was joking. But he
wasnt. Then I was angry that hed never told me.
But how could he? It took a bit of getting used
to, but now lifes pretty much how it used to be
before he told me football, cars, clubbing.

11
  • I cant say I completely understand yet, but I
do know Id be really missing out if he wasnt
    around.
  • Its time to accept.

12
  • All schools have students who have either
    identified themselves as homosexual.
  • These students should not be made to feel
like second class citizens. No matter where they
are in the process of defining their sexuality,
these students should be treated with respect and
dignity by their school teachers and classmates.

13
  • Students who approach a teacher or school
counselor with questions about their sexuality
should not be encouraged to instantly label
themselves as homosexual. Rather, they should be
given information from both sides of the debate
    regarding sexual orientation and development.
  • In other words, students should be allowed to
    think for themselves.

14
  • "For things to get better, people need to get rid
of the ignorant speech they use in their
  • everyday lives,"
  • Professor James Schultz

15
Exposing the null/hidden curriculum
  • Questions of identity, communication, community,
and honesty are central to an adolescents
    development.
  • If key pieces of these elements are missing for
some students (and teachers) but not for others,
then the curriculum communicates a message about
those who are EXCLUDED in this dynamic. (Sawyer
    Norris, 2004)

16
  • Instead of denying differences it is important
  • that we
  • make differences Visible
  • make differences The source of curriculum
