Taking Care of Little People in an Adult Teaching
Hospital Changing Code Carts to Improve
Outcomes in Pediatric Codes

Purpose
  • The code carts used by
    our institution
were equipped for both adult and
pediatric patients. Since these carts were
stocked and re-stocked centrally, and nursing
cart checks consisted only of a quick perusal
of expiration dates. Because pediatric codes are
less frequent than those in adults, the pediatric
nursing staff was largely unfamiliar with the
carts contents and their location. In an arrest
situation, precious time was spent locating
    necessary items

3
Description
  • To address this problem, the institution
purchased emergency carts designed around the
Broselow Tape system. Each of the carts drawers
is colored coded according to the patients
weight so that correctly sized supplies and
equipment are stored together and are rapidly
    available.

4
Description
  • All staff members were informed of the new
carts prior to placement in the pediatric units.
Nurses were then required to check the carts
daily for a three-month period. This frequent
checking allowed staff members to become familiar
with cart contents and item locations.

5
Description
  • After the initial three-month learning
period, cart checks were reduced to once a week
to ensure that staff members remained familiar
with the contents. Now, when patients are
admitted, a colored dot is placed on the
    patients individualized emergency medication
sheet. This dot corresponds with the color of
the crash cart drawer to be used in the event of
    a cardiac or respiratory arrest.

6
Evaluation/Outcome
  • Since the introduction of color-coded carts,
staff members have become very familiar with the
carts contents and feel more comfortable in
    resuscitation situations.
