15Small Learning Communities (SLC)
- These communities are made up of 300-400 students
with similar career interests - This creates the ability for teachers and
students to develop stronger relationships that
will enhance learning - Coursework will be targeted to specific careers
16Major Areas of Interest (MAI)
- Four or more courses in either a Content, Career
Technical Education, or Integrated Major - State of Florida requirement that all 9th graders
choose a MAI as part of high school graduation
requirements - Makes high school more relevant experience
- Adds more value to elective courses

- Regardless of what MAI you choose, it must be
above and beyond the normal graduation
requirements - A MAI is NOT the same as picking a college major
- You are selecting a MAI so that you can EXPLORE
areas you are interested in during high school

community youd like to specialize, or focus on. - Example 1 Your going to Booker HS, your SLC is
VPA, your MAI is Dance. - Example 2 Your going to Sarasota High School,
your SLC is Health Science, your MAI is Nursing

be able to find related courses that your

registration - You only register at your DISTRICTED high school
UNLESS you have been accepted into IB, VPA,
