What is NA-YGN?
  • North American-Young Generation in Nuclear
  • A national organization that unites young
    professionals who believe in nuclear science and
    technology and are working together throughout
    North America to share their passion for a field
    that is alive and kicking!
  • Membership is free and open to anyone in the
    nuclear industry who is under the age of 35, has
    less than 10 years of work experience, and/or
    supports the development of our young generation

The Carolina Chapter of NA-YGN
  • Composed of members from all three Duke Energy
    nuclear sites and the General Office
  • The Chapter intends to provide the following for
    Duke Energys younger workforce
  • Social opportunities
  • Professional guidance
  • A line of communication to management
  • Volunteer opportunities

History of Carolina Chapter
  • Founded in 2005 by eleven core members
  • Elected chapter officers
  • Elected one site representative for each Duke
    Energy nuclear site and the General Office
  • Chapter has grown to over 100 members

Networking Opportunities
  • Duke-wide kickoff meeting in August 2005 with Jim
    Morris as keynote speaker
  • Duke-wide meeting in February 2006 with Judy
    Schulte as keynote speaker
  • Each Duke nuclear site has held a kick-off
    meeting and socials to encourage membership and
    provide a social opportunity for new professionals

Public Information
  • Two members represented NA-YGN at the Blue Ridge
    Environmental Defense Leagues anti-nuclear press
    conference in April 2006
  • GO members have made posters for pro-nuclear
    rallies
  • Carolina NA-YGN co-sponsored a reception for NRC
    Commissioner Jeffery Merrifield in February 2006
  • Two members attended the 2005 ANS Winter Meeting
    and worked at the NA-YGN booth there promoting
    the nuclear agenda

Professional Development
  • We have sent members to the National
  • NA-YGN Professional Development Workshop in
    both 2005 and 2006
  • Teamed with Women in Nuclear (WIN) to host two
    lunch and learn sessions
  • Kicking off the Mentoring Program

  • The Professional Development and Public
    Information Committees are forming to provide
    leadership opportunities for all members
  • Implement outreach programs at local schools to
    educate youth on nuclear energy
  • Expanding and improving our web site

Overview
  • Bridge the Divide was developed to
  • Break the generational barriers among Duke
    employees
  • Reduce staff turnover
  • Transfer tribal knowledge to the next generation

Purpose
  • Bridge the Divide will develop a supportive
    corporate culture, by allowing senior level
    managers to mentor Carolina YGN Chapter members
  • It creates opportunities for honest conversation
    and enhances new employees understanding of
    managers roles.
  • The program helps mentor/mentee recognize their
    abilities and limitations, and highlights areas
    for future development.

Bridge the Divide
  • All mentors are manager-level Duke professionals.
  • All mentees are Carolina YGN Chapter members.
  • Each mentor will be paired with a mentee from a
    different Duke Energy nuclear site.
  • The mentor and mentee will meet a minimum of once
    every other month.

Mentor/Mentee Activities
  • Luncheon meetings
  • Job shadowing
  • Attending executive meetings with your mentee
  • Attending presentations and business conferences
  • Mentor/Mentee social events

Mentors Role
  • Must be committed to the mentoring program
  • Patient and willing to spend time with their
    mentee
  • Support the mentee in setting appropriate goals
    and assessing progress in relation to their goals
  • Encourage new professionals to stay motivated and
    focused on their career
  • Help new professionals face difficult career
    challenges
  • Offer new professionals opportunities to consider
    new career paths
  • Maintain unconditional positive regard for the
    mentee
  • Willingness to share knowledge
