I2 Multicast today

• vBNS and Abilene will enable for multicast any
  participants who desire.
• Both networks support native multicast
  protocols, as identified by I2 multicast working
  group.
• Abilene now turns on multicast with all new
  connections (allowing sites to enable it as they
  are ready).

What does native multicast mean?

• Tunneling (multicast hidden within IP) or
  flooding dont scaleuse native protocols
  instead.
• Internet2 native multicast protocols
• Multicast Source Discovery Protocol advertises
  multicast sources (speakers) among domains
• Multiprotocol BGP designates multicast routes,
  allows for policy control
• Protocol-independent multicast forms multicast
  distribution trees only to nodes who want it
