Easter in the Czech Republic
  • Easter in the Czech Republic is a fun
time. Many traditions are still observed and
practiced, especially in villages, and different
regions may have their own Easter tradition and
    customs.

4
Traditional symbols
  • Pussywillow twigs these are thought to bring
health and youth to anyone who is whipped with
    them.
  • An Easter pomlázka (from the word pomladit or
"make younger") is a braided whip made from
    pussywillow twigs.
  • It has been used for centuries by boys who go
caroling on Easter Monday and symbolically whip
    girls on the legs.

5
Easter eggs
  • The hand-painted or otherwise decorated egg
(kraslice) is the most recognizable symbol of
Czech Easter. Girls decorate Easter eggs to give
them to boys on Easter Monday.

6
Easter egg decorating techniques
  • Different materials can be used, such as bee's
wax, straw, water colors, onion peel, picture
    stickers.
  • There are no limitations to creating pretty,
    colourful eggs.

7
The days before Easter Sunday (Monday) -1
  • Ugly Wednesday (you should not mourn otherwise
you will be unhappy for the rest of the year
  • Green Thursday (you should eat something green
    spinach, cress, lettuce etc)
  • Good Friday (the day of Jesuss crucifixion, you
    should fast, eat no meat)

8
The days before Easter Sunday (Monday) - 2
  • White Saturday (on this day new born children
were christened and priests wore white habits)
  • Easter Sunday (a day of preparations for Easter
Monday. Girls paint, colour and decorate eggs if
they haven't done so already, and boys prepare
    their rods)
  • Easter Monday (boys would whip girls lightly on
the legs, girls would give boys decorated eggs)

9
Easter rewards for boys and men
  • Traditional rewards for boys used to be decorated
    cooked eggs.
  • Today many boys prefer chocolate eggs or other
    sweets (sometimes they get money).
  • The reward for adults (men) has also changed
drinks of plum brandy (slivovice) are often given
to them instead of or in addition to painted eggs
    and candy.

10
Easter carols (rhymes)
  • Boys have to say some Easter rhymes to girls if
they want to get something as a reward (eggs,
    sweets).
  • Traditional Easter carols are asking for an egg
or two, they are using other symbols like Easter
    rams, rabbits, sheep e.t.
