Title: The%20Priesthood%20and%20the%20ministry%20of%20the%20altar

1
The Priesthood and the ministry of the altar
2
Objection
  • The people who object the existence of the
priesthood, object the presence of the altar.
They claim that there is no altar in the New
Testament, and consequently, no sacrifice should
    exist.

3
The existence of the altar (1)
  • The words of St. Paul confirm the existence of
the altar in the New Testament We have an altar
from which those who serve the tabernacle have no
    right to eat Heb. 1310
  • Those who served the tabernacle are those Jews
who remained Jews and thus they can not partake
    of the Christian altar.

4
The existence of the altar (2)
  • The prophecy in the Book of Isaiah about the
existence of an altar to the Lord, in the land of
Egypt was not fulfilled until the Christian era
In that day there will be an altar to the Lord
in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar
to the Lord at its border Isaiah 1919

5
The existence of the altar (3)
  • The prophet Malachi prophesied about the presence
of altars in the nations. This was only fulfilled
in the New Testament. For from the rising of the
sun, even to its going down, My name shall be
great among the Gentiles In every place incense
shall be offered to My name and a pure offering
    Malachi 111

6
The Holy Sacrifice (1)
  • The sacrament of the Eucharist is to be found in
the four gospels and in the first epistle to the
    Corinthians - Matt. 2626 28 - Mark
    14 22 24 - Luke 22 19 20 - John 6
    32 58 - 1 Cor.1016-21 - 1Cor.1123
    - 30

7
The Holy Sacrifice (2) It is not an ordinary bread
  • The Lord described it as - The true bread from
heaven (Jn.632) - I am the bread of life
(Jn.635) - I am the bread that came down from
    heaven (Jn.651)

8
The Holy Sacrifice (3) The bread is the body of
the Lord
  • the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which
I shall give for the life of the world Jn.651
  • For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is
    drink indeed Jn.655
  • Take and eat this is My body Matt.2626
  • Take it this is My body Mark 1422

9
The Holy Sacrifice (4) The blessings of partaking
of the Communion
  • Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has
eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last
    day Jn.654
  • He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides
in Me, and I in him Jn.656
  • If anyone eats of this bread, he will live
    forever Jn.651

10
The Holy Sacrifice (5) The loss suffered by those
who do not partake
  • Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the
flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you
have no life in you Jn.653

11
The Holy Sacrifice (6) The punishments for those
who partake in an unworthy manner
  • Therefore whoever eats this bread and drink this
cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be
guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord
    1Cor.1127
  • But let a man examine himself, and so let him
eat of the bread and drink of the cup 1Cor.1128

12
The Holy Sacrifice (6) The punishments for those
who partake in an unworthy manner
  • For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner
eats and drinks judgment to himself, not
    discerning the Lords body 1Cor.1129

13
The Holy Sacrifice (7)
  • Concerning the priesthood of Christ, St. Paul
said quite distinctly that another priest
should rise according to the order of Mechizedek,
and not be called according to the order of
    Aaron Heb.711
  • So what exactly was this priesthood that was
according to the order of Mechizedek?

14
The Holy Sacrifice (8)
  • Melchizedek did not offer blood sacrifices, he
only offered bread and wine (Gen.1418).
  • Thus, he presented the divine sacrifice in the
form of bread and wine as our Lord Jesus Christ
    did on Covenant Thursday.

15
The Holy Sacrifice (9)
  • The words You are a priest forever according
to the order of Melchizedek Heb.721, mean that
the offering of the sacrifice of bread and wine
still continues, and is never to end as long as
we are on earth and in need for forgiveness of
    sins.

16
Objection 1
Do this in remembrance of Me (1)
  • The first objection we find is How can something
    be in remembrance of itself?
  • Nothing at all to prevent something being a
remembrance of itself, and as an example of that
    is the manna.

17
Objection 1
Do this in remembrance of Me (2)
  • The Israelites placed in the Ark of the Covenant
a jar containing an omer of manna, in remembrance
of the manna which they had eaten for forty years
    in the desert.
  • Therefore, the manna that was in the jar was in
remembrance of the manna that they had eaten.

18
Objection 1
Do this in remembrance of Me (3)
  • This phrase meant that they were to keep on
    performing this sacrament.
  • It also should be read with all the other verses
    concerning the subject (mentioned before).
  • We do indeed remember Him when we partake of His
    body and blood.

19
Objection 2
Christ Sacrifice was once and for all (1)
  • It is indeed once and for all, yet it also
    continues for ever.
  • It is a continuous sacrifice as the Lord said Do
this in remembrance of Me. If He hadnt wanted
it to continue, He would not have said Do
    thisuntil I come.

20
Objection 2
Christ Sacrifice was once and for all (2)
  • This sacrament continues because the Lord is a
priest forever, offering His sacrifice in the
order of Mechizedek (Psalm 1104, Heb.721)

21
The Lord handed down this Sacrament to His
disciples (1)
  • He didnt say to all the congregation of
believers, do this in remembrance of Me, but
    only to His disciples.
  • The people, though, were to eat the flesh and
drink from the cup, and proclaim the death of the
    Lord until He comes

22
The Lord handed down this Sacrament to His
disciples (2)
  • St. Paul speaking of this sacrament, said The
cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the
communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which
we break, is it not the communion of the body of
    Christ?

23
The Lord handed down this Sacrament to His
disciples (3)
  • Notice how he speaks on behalf of the apostles
when he says which we bless and The bread
which we break, because it was an instruction
that was given specially to the apostles and
    their successors.
