Why Do People Develop This?
  • Biological Basis
  • -7-12 times more likely if related
  • -Chromosome 1 holds gene for disorder

  • Dysfunctional Family Lifestyle

  • -Perfectionist, ridged, anxious

Symptoms/ Warning Signs
  • Skipping meals/snacks at home and school
  • Mood change
  • Over exercising
  • Increased insecurities
  • Wear loose clothing
  • Difficultly handling stress
  • Increased obsession with food

  • Constantly preoccupied with thinking about food
  • Lots of anxiety
  • Obsessively counting calories, fat grams
  • Cooking and baking for others
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Obsessive behavior
  • Spitting out, throwing away food before finished
    eating

  • Chewing food for a long time
  • Eat slowly

Effects?
  • Some drop 85 below normal weight
  • Heart attacks, arthritis, osteoporosis, enamel
    from teeth disintegrates, decreased potassium in
    blood
  • Trouble concentrating and making good decisions
  • Sensitivity to temperature
  • Think constantly about food
  • Refuse treatment, tell people they are trying to
    make them fat
  • Try to hide their disease

Treatment
  • Psychodynamic Try to understand the disease and
    why they developed it
  • Cognitive Behavioral Replaces distorted views of
    body with more positive ones
  • Disease Addiction Approach treatment like people
    who are addicted to drugs and alcohol
  • Expressive arts therapists, exercise specialists,
    individual, group, expressive, cognitive, and
    family therapy body image treatment, stress
    management nutrition education and counseling
    and education
  • Some medications like Prozac
  • Treatment can cost up to 1,000 daily
  • Takes years of continuous therapy and education
  • Easier to treat if caught at an earlier age

Aftermath
  • If gone untreated, 20 of people with eating
    disorders will die at a young age
  • 1 in 10 people will remain eating disordered
  • Relapse is very common ?learning experience
  • Always have some remnants of disease
