Title: THE BASIC SYSTEM

1
THE BASIC SYSTEM
  • Hollow expanded
    polystyrene block
  • 1200mm long
  • 300mm high
  • 150/180mm wide
  • Core filled with concrete and Y10 reinforcement.
  • Finish plastered with specially developed plaster
    StyroGuard

2
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • SPEED OF CONSTRUCTION
  • 3-5 times faster than brick or concrete block
  • Bricklayer average 7-8m2/day
  • Styrox 30-40m2/day.Faster on straight walls.

3
760m2 Styrox house - walls completed
in 15 working days
4
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • THERMAL INSULATION
  • Expanded polystyrene acts as an insulating
    material. (Igloo effect)
  • Thermal insulation compared to other materials
  • - 400 vs cement blocks
  • - 60-70 vs solid brick wall
  • - 40-50 vs cavity brick wall
  • Gives better living environment and reduces
    energy costs

5
  • THERMAL INSULATION
  • R Value
  • STYROX
    1,76
  • SINGLE BRICK WALL PLASTERED 3,90
  • 190MM CEMENT BLOCK PLASTERED 5,90
  • ½ BRICK WALL PLASTERED 9,10
  • 140MM CEMENT BLOCK PLASTERED 10,00

6
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY
  • Provides continuous reinforced concrete structure
    in a permanent formwork
  • 2,5 times as strong as equivalent brick wall.
(Infill mix 15MPa develops to 20MPa)
  • This provides added security and reduced
    maintenance costs

7
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • EASE OF BUILDING
  • Do not need a lot of skilled artisans
  • Easy to train unskilled labour to use system
  • Ideal for woman
  • No need for lintels over openings
  • Blocks can be cut to size with hand saw
  • Services either run in cavities or by cutting
    polystyrene with carpet saw

8
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • WEIGHT REDUCTION
  • 50 lighter than solid or cavity brick wall
  • Allows reduction in structural support/foundations
  • Can make even lighter with lightweight infill
    concrete

9
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • WATER/DAMP RESISTANCE
  • The Styrox block is impervious to water.
  • StyroGuard plaster contains an acrylic polymer
    which itself resists water.
  • Improves living conditions in coastal and wet
    environments.

10
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTED
  • Expanded polystyrene is a standard building
material in Europe, Asia/Pacific and the USA
because of the advantages listed and the high
cost of labour in these markets. Brick is seldom
    used.

11
  • INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTED
  • 15 of residential construction in the US now
    from LCFs/ICFs (lightweight concrete forms
    /insulated concrete forms)
  • This method of construction has doubled every
    year since 1997
  • Most popular method timber frame with
    prefabricated insulated panels

12
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • AGREMENT CERTIFIED AND NHBRC APPROVED
  • Styrox has been in South Africa for 10 years
  • and received Agrement certification and NHBRC
    approval

13
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
  • Agrément SA Certificate No. 98/267
  • This certification clears way for banks to
    provide bond finance

THE FUTURE
  • Energy efficient legislation 2008/2009 effecting
    new homes.
  • Power shortages.
  • Brick and labour shortages.
  • Housing backlog
  • NHBRC rapid build and innovative home design
    competitions.
  • Government drive to introduce alternative
    technologies.
  • Increased use of expanded polystyrene in
buildings wall systems, slab systems, cornices
and wall mouldings, insulated ceilings, insulated
