Purpose of Informative Speaking
  • Give the audience information.
  • 2. Teach the audience about your topic.

Types of Informative Presentations
  • Briefing short talks that give an already
    interested audience specific information.
  • Brief at shift change, run down of daily
    specials, ect.
  • Characteristics of a Briefing
  • Short usually only 2 or 3 minutes.
  • Organization simple yet organized.
  • Content getting someone ready to do the job at
    hand.
  • Visual aids seldom used
  • Language/Delivery conversational, less formal

  • Reports give the audience an account of what
    you have learned or done.
  • Internal report given to people within the
    organization.
  • External report given to clients, agencies, or
    the general public.
  • Some reports are written, others oral.

  • Status Reports a report of how a project is
    progressing.
  • Characteristics of a Status Report
  • Review the projects purpose.
  • Briefly review current work.
  • Provide next milestone.
  • Forecast the future of the project.

    or undertaking.
  • May be formal or informal.
  • Length varies on importance of topic.

    potential actions and recommends how the
    organization should proceed.
  • Should a business implement bonuses?
  • Is job sharing a good idea?
  • Usually lengthy process.
  • Formal, typed report often presented.

  • Training teaches listeners how to do something.
  • Could be a small training session how to work
    phone system, sexual harassment, ect.
  • Could be lengthy training schools training on
    equipment, skills, or products.

  • Explanations increases listeners understanding
    of a subject.
  • Explaining the benefits a company offers.
  • Explaining the new road project to residents of
    the community.

Rules for Informative Presentations
  • Relate your topic to the audience.
  • Use visual aids when able.
  • Avoid jargon.
  • Be organized!
