Title: Welcome to IndiX

1
Welcome to IndiX
A project at C-DAC Mumbai
Funded by TDIL Programme
Ministry of Communications
Information Technology, Govt of India
To facilitate Indian language usage on computers
2
What is IndiX
To enable suitable components within the
GNU/Linux Graphical User Interface system so that
users can create, edit, view and print text
(contents) in 12 major Indian languages,
including Marathi language just as they do with
English
3
Why IndiX
The basic IndiX agenda is that the text
processing should be as easy for the Indian
scripts as it is for English for the user.
4
IndiX features
  • Minimal, logical and required changes within the
lowermost level of widely used and deployed
    software architecture GNU/Linux
  • It is not a product but a capability added
    whenever text processing is present.
  • Any internationalized software can work on IndiX
    without recompiling.
  • Just as X11 server accesses fonts for English,
and converts English characters to their shapes,
in IndiX X11 server accesses fonts for Marathi,
    Hindi, hence efficient
  • Most general transformation from M characters to
N glyphs and intelligent font used with Indic
    scripts.

5
IndiX features
6. Based on grouping and reordering of characters
on the Unicode standard and the minimal model of
fonts. 7. Separates page layout operations from
the OpenType layout operations using the improved
standard proposed for visual glyph encoding named
Raghu. 8. Filenames, directory names can be
given in Indian languages 9. Commands can be
given in Indian Languages 10. Quality Printing is
possible using print-tools.
6
IndiX architecture
Core windowing system of the GNU/Linux (X11
server and Client) are enhanced with Indic
capability. X11 server accesses the fonts for
Indic languages and converts them to shapes. (In
alternative architectures Indic text has to be
cooked in the X11 Client backyard alone)
7
IndiX platform
  • The IndiX Live CD can be used on top of any
operating system without disturbing the operating
    system
  • IndiX can be put as an alternative OS along with
the resident OS, on a different partition (of
    size about 5GB)
  • The programs which work with alternate/resident
shaping engines (yudit, openOffice) can be run
    from IndiX platform.

8
Multilinguality
In IndiX Multilingual text can be easily
entered/searched/modified/deleted using flexible
input schemes. Supports both Inscript (national
standard) and Rupantar (phonetic input scheme).
9
Action plan
  • Standardisation
  • Make non-internationalised popular softwares also
    work on IndiX
  • Localisation
  • User-friendliness, documentations, howtos, books
  • Variety of fonts
  • Creative content designs

10
Proposals
  • Creating IndiX community
  • Arranging workshops for Technology transfer, font
    developments
  • Bi-lingual Maharashtra
