Course objectives
  • The course is designed to enlarge your knowledge
    of the business world and develop the essential
    communication and language skills needed in
    business contexts. It aims to build competence,
    fluency and confidence in learners in handling
    telephoning, socializing, negotiating, meetings
    and presentations.

Introduction to Market Leader (1 of 2)
  • Market Leader is a pre-intermediate level
    business English course for business people and
    students of business English. It has been
    developed in association with the Financial
    Times, one of the leading sources of business
    information in the world. It consists of 12 units
    covering the following topics Careers, Selling
    online, Companies, Great ideas, Stress,
    Entertaining, Marketing, Planning, Managing
    people, Conflict, New business, Products.

  • The course will greatly improve your ability to
    communicate in English in a wide range of
    business situations, develop the communication
    skills you need to succeed in business and will
    enlarge your knowledge of the business world.
    Everybody studying this course will become more
    fluent and confident in using the language of
    business and should increase their career
    prospects.

  • Discuss the topic and exchange ideas through a
    variety of interesting activities.
  • Learn new words/phrases which you can use when
    carrying out tasks in the unit.
  • Build up confidence and improve fluency through
    discussion activities.
  • Read adapted articles from Financial Times and
    other newspapers.
  • Hear interviews with businesspeople. Develop
    listening skills such as note-taking.

  • Become more accurate in your use of language.
  • Develop business communication skills such as
    making presentations, taking part in meetings,
    negotiating, telephoning and using English in
    social situations.
  • Use your language and communication skills
    developed while working through the unit.
    Practice your speaking skills in realistic
    business situations. Youll have a writing task
    at the end of each Case study.
  • Market Leader also contains four revision units,
    based on material covered in the preceding three
    units.

Course requirements (1 of 3)
  • Attendance
  • Students are expected to attend all classes and
    complete all course requirements. Excused
    absences are those accompanied by a doctor's or
    department offices note.  Remember that to
    receive a grade for attendance, you may not be
    absent unexcused for more than five times. Each
    unexcused absence results in a deduction of 2
    points. It is your responsibility to find out
    what you have missed if you are absent from
    class. You must complete any make-up work or
    assignments on the same schedule as the rest of
    the class. Being absent does not excuse you from
    tests or tasks on the day you return. Should you
    be absent for any reason, please try to inform
    the instructor in advance and ask a classmate to
    collect handouts for you.

  • Punctuality is also very important. Students who
    are late are disruptive to the rest of the class
    and may hold back group activities. So please
    arrive on time.
  • Only registered students may attend classes
    please do not bring friends to class.
  • Please turn off cell phones before class begins.
  • Class Participation Role Play
  • Your participation in class discussions, role
    plays and group projects is important and is an
    essential part of your grade. Students are
    expected to take an active role in class
    activities and remember your contribution to the
    activities benefits everybody including you.
    Simulation games will be given to check for
    understanding of homework and class lectures.

  • Presentations
  • Students will be required to lead formal
    presentations. Your presentation will be
    critiqued on the rubric prepared by the
    instructor, which puts great emphasis on content,
    organization, effectiveness, preparation,
    delivery and teamwork skills.
  • Please sign up for presentation topic in week 2
    and make appointments to discuss the topic with
    the instructor at least one week before you give
    the presentation.
  • You have one week to discuss with your group
    members which topic youd like to choose. You
    must choose the topics from
  • section, try to analyze
    the discussion questions and give your
    presentations within 5 minutes. Then youll have
    2 minutes to answer questions from
    classmates/Stella.
