My home is my castle
  • There is a common saying among the British
people,My home is my castle. The wind can come
in,but the Kings and Queens and human beings can
never come in without my permission.

7
Unit 7 An Englishmans Home Is His Castle
  • Housing
  • For the new couple the first essential after
marriage is a place to live in, because they
usually want to live independently. Housing in
Britain is better than in most countries in the
world. The total amount of space in comparison
with the population is greater than almost any
other country, but the housing space is not
    evenly distributed.

8
  • The British people traditionally like to
live on small housesthat is why there are not
too many high buildings, and most of them are in
the centre of London. Most of the houses consist
of two floors with a garden at the front and
back. On the ground floor, there is the front
room , the living room, the kitchen and the hall,
from which a staircase leads to the landing on
the first floor. On this floor there are two or
three bedrooms, a bathroom and a lavatory. There
are many types of houses, such as the detached
house, semi-detached house, and the terraced
houses. There is another type of house built by
the local authorities, which is called a Council
House, whose rents are low and which are for
    those who are comparatively poor.

9
  • Even before the marriage the young couple
will put their money together, and start saving
for a house. Meanwhile they may look through
advertisements to find a house for rent, they
may mortgage a house through a building society
or they may buy a house outright, which seldom
happens, because they usually cannot afford such
a sum of money. Suppose they mortagage a house
through a building society, for which they can
borrow up to 95 of the value of the house on the
security of the property. Then they have to pay
back a little of the loan on the house each month
    for use.

10
  • In a bout twenty years they may pay off the
debt and become full owners of the house. If they
fail to pay the mortgage over a certain period of
time in the twenty years, the building society
has the right to reclaim the property. So they
have to work hard and try to avoid unemployment.
The house is usually unfurnished, and they have
to buy their own furniture. Usually when the
wedding arrangements are made the young couple
visit the shops together, choosing furniture,
fabrics, kitchenware, tableware and many other
things for the wedding. When they take possession
of the house, they spend a lot of time arranging
the furniture, decorating the rooms and making
    them comfortable .
