Computer Aided Publishing
Part Two
The software explosion

PageMaker was an instant success

IBM-PC
Graphics-based software and applications became
possible on PCs.
Product did not really catch on.
Windows not widespread until version 3.1 in 1992
Delay in success of Windows meant the PC lost out
to the Macintosh in the commercial design and
publishing world.
5
1987
PageMaker 2.0 released for Macintosh
PageMaker 1.0 for Microsoft Windows
Present version is 7.0 (Macintosh and Windows) -

Quark company founded 1981, in Denver.
Named after the subatomic particle proposed as
the building block for all matter.
Started by producing the early word processing
software for Apple Macintosh.
It then developed typesetting software, leading
to QuarkXpress in 1987 for the Macintosh.
7
Windows version of Quark (version 3.1) first
released in 1992.
Presently version 7 (released August 2006) for
both Macintosh and Windows.
8
QuarkXpress became main competitor to PageMaker.
More popular in the commercial world as had more
facilities and more subtlety earlier than
PageMaker.
By version 3.1 of Quark (released November 1992),
PageMaker was largely replaced by Quark in the
commercial World Quark became the industry
standard.

The future of PageMaker and InDesign
At InDesign launch two programs would run
parallel and Pagemaker 6.5 last version
But - 2001 PageMaker 7 released
March 2004 - no further development work on
PageMaker and all users would be encouraged to
move to InDesign.
17
InDesign becoming very popular in the printing
and design industry
2006 Adobe claim 74 of market share but Quark
claim 80 market share
Success, largely comparing to Quark, due to
- more intuitive to use
- excellent facilities
- ease of working with Adobe PhotoShop (good
integration between Adobe suite of programs)
- customer support
- good price

The Telegraph newspaper (2001)

Condé Nasts magazine Glamour
Hearst Magazines, who publish, e.g. Cosmo, Marie

Other typesetting programs available, e.g.
