  • Last year we decided to organize a Cuba trip,
    for
  • Performance, in concerts and workshops
  • Cultural exchange, to learn about Cuban way of
    life
  • Personal enrichment

Tour Organization
  • We had to raise 57 000 in funds for a 10-day
    tour with a group of 35 people
  • Finally, February 17, 2002, we were on a plane

Cienfuegos
  • This old theatre where we had our fist Cuban
    concert, the Teatro Tomàs Terry, is more than 100
    years old

Cienfuegos
  • Cienfuegos means a hundred fires
  • Its on the Caribbean, so even at night the
    water is warm
  • Our first night there I found a small lizard in
    my room!

Havana
  • We got to visit old Havana (la Habana Vieje), a
    point of interest for tourists
  • One night we couldnt go to a jazz club on the
    Malecón, a seaside road, because it got flooded
    by the sea!

  • We had the privilege of playing with the
    university orchestra Musica Eterna under the
    direction of Guido Gavilàn, composer and
    conductor
  • Despite a lack of everything but the basics,
    these young people are very dedicated,
    world-class musicians

Old Havana
  • The Basilica de San Francisco de Asis, where we
    had our last concert of the tour
  • It was taped by a few local stations and
    broadcasted on TV
  • Fidel Castro was invited, but he never showed

Back to Canada
  • February 23rd we returned to Canada with many
    lovely memories of our trip to Cuba

What I learned in Cuba
  • Were lucky in Canada in Cuba, the economy is
    terrible they have nothing and are treated like
    second-class citizens in their own country while
    the tourists are kings

What I learned in Cuba
  • The culture is very rich music and musicians
    are everywhere, an integral part of Cuban life
  • With music comes dance even us little Canadians
    without rhythm were able to learn the salsa

  • Ernest Hemingway, American writer
  • José Martí, national hero

  • tobacco famous Cuban cigars
  • Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Cohiba
  • rum Havana Club
  • mojitos (rum, mint, sugar and soda water)
  • cuba libre (rum and Coke)
